The fallacy that everything we liked when we were kids sucked

edited 2011-12-25 12:35:46 in General
Or that things were automatically worse/just as bad when we were kids as they are now, and we just don't realize it because we filter out all the bad stuff.

I see this mostly being used against people who are too nostalgic for their own good, and I understand that people want to shut that kind of thinking down, but it's really just the same sort of blanket generalization as "everything was better when I was a kid", only in reverse. Sometimes your nostalgia can mislead you, yes, but is it really that much of a stretch to say truthfully that, for example, old Spongebob is better than new Spongebob?

Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
I think that the whole "everything was terrible when I was a kid" thing is just as faulty as the "everything you loved as a kid is inherently better than the shit they have today" thing.
  • You can change. You can.
There's a truth to the fact that your standards as a kid were low, though.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Yeah. I'd say that kids are more likely to be okay with stuff that sucks, but that doesn't work the other way around, necessarily.
  • Really, I'm just worn out with people trying to counter fallacious thinking with more fallacious thinking.

But I know that's never gonna stop anyway.

...I wonder if it is a fallacy to say that all fallacies suck?
  • You can change. You can.
They don't all suck, but they all possess faulty logic.

It's in the definition. And thus, it's not a fallacy.
  • I don't even call it violence when it's in self defence; I call it intelligence.
Yeah, it wouldn't be a fallacy, but it would be a tautology.
