Why did the N64 controller have a D-Pad?

Kichigai birthday!!
Seriously,how many games actually used it? Three? Four? And on the same note,why did the PsOne controller have not one,but two analog sticks?

  • You can change. You can.
    Because menus with analogs are a horrible bitch from hell.

    That and it was better for most 2D games.

    IIRC the original PS1 controller had zero analog sticks, but there were a few games that used the dual-shock controller to pioneer the two-stick style we're all used to now.

    Yup, I had one of those. I actually preferred it to analogs for a long while.

    Kichigai birthday!!
    ^ Yeah the PS1 controller was basically a SNES controller in the beggining, but the analogs one is the most remembered.

    And as for N64 games that used the D-Pad not in menus, I can only think of Kirby's Crystal Shards,Yoshi's Story and Mischief Makers

    Because some minigames on Pokemon Stadium are easier to play with a d pad
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    ^^Those are some pretty good games.

    I didn't say anything about their quality,but I agree with you. Still have to play Mischief Makers though
  • Mischief Makers is like my favorite N64 game.
  • Killer Instinct Gold used both. Maybe the other fighting games did, too?
  • Holy SHIT other people that are familiar with Mischief Makers.

    That game was so Nintendo Hard it wasn't even funny.
  • No rainbow star
    ^ Except to those watching the person play? :D?
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
    You know what game pissed me off as a kid?

    Castlevania 64.

    "Oh I loved the Super Castlevania games I bet this will be great!"

    And thus was I opened to a harsh reality.

    They tried to do certain things with those games, and they didn't do them well.

    They wanted:
    * level-by-level format (like the classicvanias)
    * lots of plot events/complexity
    * 3D platforming

    If only they had instead done 3D castletroids.
