More seriously, it saddens me how much value is still put not just on looking good (I get that we all like sexy things) but that that's the only way to attract and keep someone.

It's also usually the first thing people notice about others, for obvious reasons, so it's always going to play a pretty big role at least in initial attraction.  Ideally though it should stop being as much of a big deal after the people get to know each other, but... I dunno.  The things that people base attraction on are always going to be arbitrary anyway so I have a hard time thinking of any particular basis as being bad or good or whatever.  If physical appearance is the primary thing a person cares about, then I guess that's pretty shallow but whatever, it is what it is.
