My mom never let me watch The Simpsons as a kid

Thus depriving me of a central point of reference to American pop culture.

  • And why would you need to know about American pop culture as a kid? I'm guessing that pop culture has changed since the time you were a kid.
  • You can change. You can.
Because it's something you'd share and talk about with your peers.
  • Do you know what it's like to feel left out of Bart Simpson jokes?

    DO YOU?
  • Wouldn't the greater loss be that you were deprived of some funny jokes?

  • You can change. You can.
Not really, as you can still watch the show. The only problem is that you can't enjoy it with other people and talk about it.
  • Kichigai birthday!!
    >Implying that simply saying a random Simpson quote in whatever social situation isn't the best ice breaker ever
  • "I've come to the conclusion that this is a VERY STUPID IDEA."
I wasn't allowed to watch a lot of cartoons when I was younger. My parents thought they were a waste of time. (In retrospect, they were probably right about most of them, but there were still some gems that I must've missed out on.)
  • I'll never know if I wouldn't be allowed to watch TV as a kid because I never did anyway, I was scared of it at first and then got so used to reading that most cartoons just sort of looked dumb to me and I got into anything.

I've been deprived of an awful lot of 90's pop culture. By existing ignorant of popular music and TV throughout my childhood, I effectively made myself "not a 90's kid." And I'm really not complaining.
  • My mom never really cared what I watched on Tv, for the most part.
  • I was such a little dweeb as a child that my parents had to MAKE me watch cartoons. I was too afraid of them. They made me watch an episode of the simpsons and I got grossed out by Itchy & Scratchy, refusing to watch again for many years :(

    I caught up when I was about 12 or 13 I think.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I wasn't allowed to watch Power Rangers as a kid.

I watched them at a neighbor's and now I Download Super Sentai and Kamen Rider.
  • ^^Ok, so now this sounds like me except...why did they feel it necessary to make you watch TV? With all due respect, that's one of the odder minor parenting quirks I've ever heard.
  • We Played Some Open Chords and Rejoiced, For the Earth Had Circled the Sun Yet Another Year
When I was younger and still watched TV, I used to think The Simpsons was boring, and I watched Family Guy and Futurama on [adult swim] instead. XD
  • I DIDN'T KNOW WHERE "A WIZARD DID IT" CAME FROM

DO YOU KNOW WHAT THAT IS LIKE?
  • With a million zillion episodes even viewers forget where "a wizard did it" came from.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I didn't. It was one of my favorite eps as a kid.
  • You can change. You can.
That was the one with Lucy Lawless, right?

I'm a Matt Groening's lack of surprise, then.
