TF2 "Noob Weapons"

edited 2011-11-18 11:48:56 in General
You know. ever since I started looking up strategy to improve my play at TF2, I always find stuff like my beloved Backburner referred to as "noob weapons" as though somehow someone is less skilled for daring to even use them. I'm just wondering why on earth people get so pissy about such a thing. Especially since, frankly, if I managed to get behind you and burn you down with it, thats really more proof of your own incompetence.

Well to be fair weapons like the Sydney Sleeper are meant as training weapons to get people used to a certain class.

The rest is just people being butthurt.
  • I suppose so. Yeah, I'm aware the weapon has drawbacks, and is terrible to use if I'm on defense or on a map where sneaking behind enemy lines isnt very viable. I just find it vaguely ridiculous that more than a few weapons that reward taking advantage of bad play get derided. If I'm behind you as a pyro, then that means your team has serious issues with communication and defending their own flank.

Also, it must be said that when the Backburner first came out it was really overpowered. It not only had the backstab effect, but the Flamethrower's airblast AND it increased your health by 25. Because of this, it enabled a crap load of W+M1 Pyros and left a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths. That's why even now Pyros in general are sort of looked down upon even when they're, if anything, underpowered at this point.

Yeah. short of backburner crits or Degreaser/Axe spam Pyro basically gets outfought by everything. Kinda disappointing that a class thats supposed to be the king of close range combat basically gets out close-ranged by Scout or Demoman.

Not really, Spies and Scouts are very easy to kill with a Pyro. Demomen and Soldiers aren't too hard if you know how to airblast. It's really Heavies and other Pyros that give me the most trouble.
  • Heavies I find arent too bad..provided you have the Backburner and can get the jump on them. Scouts I have issues with because of their sheer speed. Demos its situational. depends on if they see me first or not and what loadout I'm wearing. I'f I'm in degreaser or reg flamethrower mode I can reflect projectiles all day. If I'm in backburner, all I can do vs demo is run like hell. Pyros are a bitch unless I get my shotgun out first though, yeah.

You know given how fast this derailed I'm thinking I might just want to make this  a general TF2 thread >.>

We already have a TF2 thread.
  • We already had a general TF2 thread.
  • we did? Huh. But I didnt see it when I searched. Oh well.

I know that I can be very irritating if I just play pyro, equip the backburner, then run around the central maze of dm_store randomly flaming anyone who crosses my path.

I find thats pretty much my niche as pyro as well. find a back path or three. flank enemy team. light their medic on fire before they can focus fire me. Run like hell once the medic and anyone else nearby are down.
