Oblivion

So this is kinda a snowclone, but also a real topic.  Only the thread title is actually a snowclone.

ES4: Oblivion is on sale on Steam until 4 PM Pacific (7 PM Eastern) today.  They're selling the game with two expansions for US$5, or the game and those two and few more expansions for a dollar and a quarter more.  Okay, fine, for $4.99 and $6.24, respectively.

Except I forgot that putting money from my bank into my Paypal actually takes like 3-5 business days.  Granted, I only found out about this deal last night.

So I could go ask someone to buy it for me, like I did last time I had this issue.  And them pay them back later.  Though...
* This time it's $6.24 (or $5), not $3.
* Last time I did this, I discovered that Steam games are more expensive in the UK.
* I've got a huge backlog of games I have yet to finish anyway.  Adding to that backlog is probably not a great idea.
* Last time I tried this, the game didn't even work.  Granted, that was the 2011 game Hydrophobia, and the required specs for the 2007 ES4 Oblivion are somewhat lesser.

The only real reason for me to buy now is to take advantage of the low price while it's conditionally (upon the purchase time) available.  And by buy now, that means asking someone to buy it for me and repaying them later.  Alternatively, I could wait until the Christmas season, at which point everything is likely to be deeply discounted again.  Of course, the selection is random, but...who cares.  I got interested in Oblivion only because people kept on saying good things about it and I've seen a acquaintance (someone in my dorm) playing it a few years ago, and it looked kinda interesting, and I've been lately trying to find a nice WRPG to play, to get me started on the genre.

That said, if I really want a WRPG, I should probably go for Fallout first, since by my estimation I'm more likely to enjoy its setting than ES4's.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I actually bought the PC version of Oblivion last Thursday while waiting for Skyrim to come out, only for it to go on sale this week. This happens every time I buy an old game on Steam.

Solution: Stick games you want on your wishlist, then bookmark that to see when they're on sale.

Well, in this case, the reason I bought it was because I wanted to be playing Elder Scrolls while waiting for Skyrim. I tried Morrowind, and...that's the source of my other thread there.

We now need threads titled "Arena", "Daggerfall", and "Skyrim."

    [/sarcasm]
  • But you never had any to begin with.
    What about Redguard and Battlespire?
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    Those are ES games?
  • But you never had any to begin with.
Yes. Neither of them are sandbox RPGs, though.
  • You can change. You can.
    Sidescrolls, iirc, right?
  • I've had Oblivion a while but just started vaguely seriously playing it recently to ward off frustration at my lack of skyrim. So far I have a crazed Nord warrior/mage hybrid slowly wandering about killing things with a 2handed hammer.
  • Hmm... I don't know whether my laptop can run it well, and I doubt I'll be playing it much, but if it's a game that long and that popular for that cheap, maybe I should get it if only to have it on my account in case I get a desktop and a lot of free time some odd years down the line.
  • You can change. You can.
Don't think my laptop could handle Oblivion. I'd still want it on my Steam account. Or buy it for a console. I think the second one would be better, anyway.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
    ^ But... but... mods!
  • You can change. You can.
Gemme a computer that runs it properly and I'll go with that, >:|

So, should I ask someone to buy it for me and pay them back on Paypal a few days later, or should I just dismiss this instance, in part because it might be discounted this deeply in the future and in part because I'm not even sure if I'll enjoy the game?
  • You can change. You can.
It's your money, Glenn. I'd suggest you buy it and play it. Five bucks are not gonna hurt you and you don't know by how much is it going to get discounted in the future. Or if it will get discounted in a foreseeable future.

but, like i said, your money, your call

And time has conveniently helped me save money. :)
  • My internet shat up, so I guess I missed my chance. Eh.

Oh by the way, who here has Steam, a Paypal account, and an internet connection in the United States?

Because I put some money into my Paypal account to buy stuff this weekend but it's probably not going to get into my account in time.  I can pay you back if you buy stuff for me, though.

(If you don't trust me, go ask IanExMachina; the reason I'm not asking him again is because he's in the UK, and Steam charges higher prices for UK users apparently.)
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
I would if I had Paypal, but after hearing some nasty things about them screwing sellers over, I've avoided getting one.
