INUH's Skyrim journal

OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
So. I just beat Skyrim.

And I want more. But I'm not going to play on my normal file just now.

So what I'm going to do instead is start a roleplay file. And I'm going to make it as immersive as possible. No fast traveling without using carriages, no using the in-game journal. I'll instead keep my own journal, which I'll post here.

But before I do that, I want input on race, specializations, personality and stuff. Thoughts?

Be a Fist Fighting Khajit down on her luck in cold land, she has to use her own expertise in crafting to survive.

    Two suggested skills.
Heavy Armour (Perk for gauntlets adding damage.)
Smithing (Skills to survive + make armour)
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Hmm...that could be quite interesting.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Yup as you already have a high base unarmed damage from being Khajitt.

You'd probably want some stealth maybe too.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    In heavy armor?

Incidentally, what are your thoughts on a name? I'm awful at names.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    Oops yeah, maybe no stealth.
Hmm maybe something like archery? Or even Block as with unarmed it would be useful to mitigate damage.

No idea on a name, I usually pick an object I can see for the non human races.
(So currently I'd go for Sour Skittles or maybe Saur Skytls) :D

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Huh, this is pretty interesting.

Anyway, yeah, Block could be good.

For magic, I might use spells I naturally run across if I'm in a pinch or have to to advance the plot (there are points where you do), but I won't train in magic or learn them on purpose.

Also shouts are fair game as your character is learning about them and they are kind of inherent skill (being dragonborn etc).

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Well, yeah. I thought that went without saying.

Incidentally, I find the notion of the Dovahkiin being a stealth character hilarious. Sneaking up on people...then shouting at them. Too bad there isn't a shout that sounds like "BOO!"

Anyway, name-wise, I'm thinking "Ma'Darra." Based on the page I linked and the interview it get its info from, that would make sense for someone who was learning to be a blacksmith, as the first two syllables would mean "young apprentice who is skilled with her hands."
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Haha yeah that is a great image.

That works really really well for a name. :D

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
    Right. First installment, coming up.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
You beat Skyrim already? Did you just plow through the main story without any side quests?
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
    *looks forward to the instalment*

^^Nope. I'd played for 44 hours when I finished. I'd done the entire Wizard's College quest, part of the Thieves Guild and a lot of assorted exploration and sidequesting.

Ma'Darra's journal. Morndas, 17th Last Seed, around 1 PM

This morning was just...wow. I didn't know days this bad could happen.

As I'd been having trouble making a living here in Skyrim and was sick of the civil war, I decided to cross the border into Cyrodiil. Well, on my way there, I felt a sharp pain in the back of my head and woke up in a carriage on the way to Helgen with my hands bound. Great start, and it quickly got worse as I learned that I'd chosen the same route as the Stormcloak rebels. I'd at first assumed that I'd be thrown in jail, but then I realized that I was sitting next to Ulfric Stormcloak himself.

When they unloaded us, another victim of circumstance, a Nord from Rorikstead, attempted to flee and was shot down by archers. At this point, I was more or less resigned to my fate, but things looked up for a moment when the Imperials realized I wasn't on the list of people to be executed. And then they decided to execute me anyway, just in case. I've never wanted to take a side in the war before, but I sure do now.

Well, as I was kneeling with my head on a block, I heard a huge roar and what seemed like moments later, the town was on fire and under attack by...I wouldn't even believe this if I hadn't seen it myself...a huge black spiky dragon. I'd always assumed that dragons were just stories to frighten the children. I know they said that the old emperors in Cyrodiil were Dragonborn, but I'd always assumed that to be a weird religious justification for the Empire or something.

At this point, I just ran wherever seemed safest for awhile, but I soon found my way into Helgen's keep with a Stormcloak named Ralof. He cut my hands free and helped me fight my way out. I stole some Imperial armor, but wearing it seems...wrong. Like wearing the enemy's colors. I'll swap it for something else at first opportunity.

I also grabbed a few books I found lying around. One taught me to shoot sparks from my hands, which is nice, but my hands are plenty deadly already. Another was this very diary, formerly belonging to an Imperial soldier. I've ripped out all the pages before this one, because I don't care about him. A third was just something I noticed lying on a table. A tome bound in black leather with a silver dragon on the cover, titled "The Book of the Dragonborn." I paged through it just now; apparently the title "Dragonborn" refers not just to the Emperors, but to many figures throughout history sharing certain abilities. Huh. Didn't know that.

Anyway, back to my escape. I fought my way past several Imperial soldiers with Ralof's help. They were armored, but their necks, oddly enough, weren't, which made things almost too easy for my claws.

I wound up in some sort of underground cave system fighting off these spiders that spat ice. I've been living in Skyrim for far longer than I'd like, and it never stops being weird.

After that, there was a bear. It was sleeping, so I tried to sneak by. That didn't work, so I ripped its jugular out instead. I took a moment to skin it; maybe I can make some armor to sell or something.

And then I finally found an exit. As we entered the light, we spotted that dragon flying off to the North. I'm glad I'm not up there right now. Ralof decided to split up with me there, but not before telling him to meet up with his sister in Riverwood, who he said could help me out. He also suggested that I join the Stormcloaks. I just might do that.

I decided to take a moment to sit down and get my thoughts together, which is why I'm writing this journal entry.

The funny thing is, I have 18 Septims and some armor, so that's actually a net gain for today. Maybe I'll stay in Skyrim after all...
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
(How is it playing unarmed like that?)
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Khajiit actually do more damage unarmed than I was doing at that point armed on my other files.
  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
That is pretty good then, the gauntlet perk can only help matters :D

Ma'Darra's journal. Morndas, 17th Last Seed, around 2:20 PM.

I walked to Riverwood. On the way, I was ambushed by three wolves. They should really learn not to pick on cats twice their size; I skinned them, adding to my collection of pelts to sell.

Once I got there, I talked to Gerda. Surprisingly, she believed my story about a dragon in Helgen. She said I should warn the Jarl in Whiterun. I'll do that, but first I'm going to make some leather and head to the local store for supplies.

Ma'Darra's journal. Morndas, 17th Last Seed, around 3:50 PM.

I took a moment to ask the local smith if I could use his leatherworking equipment. He agreed, and I tanned my bear and wolf hides and made a piece of leather armor. I'm not the best smith ever, but even that was better than what the Imperials were wearing.

Then I headed to the local shop to sell the piece of Imperial armor. The shopkeeper was arguing with his sister about going after thieves. When I asked about it, he explained that a golden dragon claw he'd been using as a decoration had been stolen. Apparently, he thinks the thieves are hiding out in Bleak Falls Barrow, a ruin on the mountain across the river. I offered to find it if he'd pay me. He agreed, and his sister pointed me on the way. So I guess I'll head there before I go to Whiterun. The things I do to make a living.

I'm on my way up to the barrow. On the way, I got attacked by a wolf and some bandits. Nothing I couldn't handle, and I looted some gold and gems from the ruined tower the latter were camping in. I also got a few pieces of armor to replace the Imperial armor I was still wearing. Much better.

On the other hand, now it's snowing. The weather was so nice earlier, too.

I fought my way into the entrance of the barrow. More bandits. At least they were carrying gold. I also found an iron ingot (if I find more, I'll forge myself some even better armor) and an enchanted piece of iron armor that does something involving spellcasting. I'll probably sell that...magic's not really my thing.

    Well, time to move on.
  • They're somethin' else.
I swear to god I'm not trolling when I say this but:

What is Skyrim and should I play it?

It's the latest Elder Scrolls game.

You should play it if you're interested in a very immersive and realized open fantasy world.

Ma'Darra's journal. Morndas, 17th Last Seed, around 7:20 PM.

I've got the claw. Along the way, I fought a few more bandits and solved a really dumb shape-matching puzzle to open a door (what in Oblivion did the ancient Nords put that in for?). Then I fought a giant version of those frozen spider things and found the man who stole the claw trapped in its web. He agreed to give me the claw if I let him out. So I let him out...and he ran away.

I chased him deeper into the crypt, where some of the interred stood up and attacked us, killing him.

I took the claw off his corpse and checked his journal. Apparently, the claw is the key to "the power of the ancient Nords" or something. I could go back, but I might as well check that out...

Fought my way past many more of the dead, and ran through a spinning blade trap (a much better defense than puzzles meant for children). I'd like to say that second one didn't hurt me, but I had to make use of a healing spell I'd learned a long time ago afterwards.

I'm now taking a rest after fighting a particularly powerful one of those things. It was guarding an ominous set of double doors. I'm going to heal again before going through those...

    Wow. Things got weird fast.

I found myself in a huge crypt, with a wall with writing I couldn't understand on it. But as I approached the wall, I thought I heard some sort of chanting, and then I could read one of the words. It said "fus." I don't know what it means, or why I could read it...is this the ancient Nordic power the journal spoke of?

I was quickly distracted from those questions when a corpse with an enchanted sword in one hand and a stone tablet in the other rose from its crypt and attacked. I killed it for real and took both.

Then I made my way back to Riverwood. On the way, I caught and ate some salmon in the river. I hate being stereotypical, but I love fish!

Once I arrived, I gave the shopkeeper what was his. He was overjoyed, and gave me 400 Septims for it, and more for the other things I sold him. Even after I bought some metal for use in my blacksmith work tomorrow, I have over a thousand Septims. It seems my luck finally turned around!

Then I went to the inn. The bartender mentioned a rumor about someone up in Windhelm trying to contact the Dark Brotherhood. Spooky. I think I'll stay away from that fellow.

Anyway, then I rented a room, and now I'm headed to bed for the night. Hopefully tomorrow will be more peaceful.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Ma'Darra's journal. Tirdas, 18th Last Seed, around 10:20 AM.

I woke up to a bard in the inn singing about some warrior named Ragnar the Red. Nice singing and all, but that early? Really?

After that, I did some work on improving my armor. I'm now clad entirely in iron. Then I set out for Whiterun to warn the Jarl about the dragon. Along the way, I ran into some Imperial soldiers escorting a Stormcloak prisoner. I was still quite angry about yesterday, so I freed the prisoner. They attacked me, naturally, but I managed to kill them all. Sadly, the prisoner couldn't escape before that, and fell to one of their blades. I still feel I did the right thing, though.

Then I saw some warriors fighting a giant. I ran over to lend a hand, but it fell before I reached them. They did tell me that they were members of the Companions, a group of warriors for hire, and said that if I wanted to join, I should head to their guild hall in Whiterun.

I then arrived at the gate to Whiterun and told the guard that I had news about the attack. He believed me, fortunately, despite the weirdness of the claim. I'm sitting just inside the gate now. A man walked over to me and asked if I was a Grey-Mane or a Battle-Born. Apparently, there are two feuding clans in Whiterun, the former of which sided with the Stormcloaks, the latter with the Empire. I told him that I was a Grey-Mane. He wasn't happy, but I can live with that.

Anyway, time to go see the Jarl.
