    Also consider that on the topic of space colonization, our travel range isn't remotely close to being able to find a habitable planet and building ships that don't really do anything new isn't going to change that, any research we can do on self-contained colonies can be done on Earth for far lesser cost and risk and would apply directly to said travel range, and even if we could establish colonies in space/moon/solar system right now they'd all still be quite dependent on Earth for supplies and would die agonizingly if anything happened to Earth.

    So it's not like our situation is going to magically change for a good long while.  If an asteroid hits anytime in the next several centuries, we're still fucked sideways.

    And besides, just because we're not sending ships up and down into empty space doesn't mean we're not still fleshing out what it would take to actually do what we need to and tossing ideas around on how to do it.  We're at a point where most of the progress we can make in space isn't really dependent on space itself anymore.
