    ANYWAY

    >I'll point out that there are plenty of countries that have hate speech legislation and have for quite some time that have not turned into Orwellian dictatorships.

Yes the UK has Hate Speech laws and we aren't an Orwellian dictatorship.

Wasn't 1984 written about the UK, specifically the state of the UK in 1948?

It was about the UK but wasn't an accurate look at the state of the UK, Orwell did draw on elements of real life such as the Ministry of Information that did WW2 propaganda being taken a turned into MiniTrue. etc

It was more his worries about British Democracy being ended by a fascist coup or socialist revolution with betrayal by totalitarian elements.

His worries never came to pass obviously.
  • Malk,

You make a fair point about minors, although this law would also relate to teachers and other school staff, so I think my point would still stand even leaving the kids out of it. Also, I'm not sure minors can't assert constitutional rights. Presumably if you go before a juvenile court, presumably you still have the right to a fair trial for instance. However, I'm not an American lawyer, so I may be wrong on that.

I actually agree that free speech in the school context is silly, I just think there may be legitimate reasons under the present set-up why this has been done. Of course, there are a lot of exceptions to free speech as it is - but many of those will have faced challenges in the courts in their time. I can see why Michigan wouldn't want to bear the expense/trouble of that.
