Cancer awareness movements

For fuck's sake, I know what cancer is and that it sucks. Posting a Facebook status isn't going to cure anyone.

Donate to medical research if you really care instead of acting like you just want other people to think you do.

I think that a lot of the cancer awareness stuff generally has good intentions behind it and I am glad that the NFL, MLB, and the like do help generate funding for cancer research using it. Still, I wonder if breast cancer is a bit overexposed (there are other kind of cancers after all) and I cannot say I am a fan of how the color pink has become so linked to that movement.

This might sound silly, but I have the same issue with the whole "going green" thing. I prefer for colors to just be stand alone things. Plus, plenty of times I feel like people invoke breast cancer awareness or "going green" superficially or halfheartedly just because they know other people will fall for it.
  • "Going green" is where the term "greenwashing" spawned from incidentally. I find it rather amusing and unsettling that people think that buying things will help deal with a crisis caused by people consuming too much.
  • As a cancer survivor, I agree with most of what's being said in this thread. Then again, I never do status reposts anyway no matter what.

But yeah, I was presented with a Livestrong band by a close friend rather abruptly when they first came out, and I refused to wear it. I'm not much for demonstrating public support for causes, mostly because I don't have any. If you want to donate money for cancer research, fine. But I'm not gonna make a big deal out of it.

  • If they'd insert personal experience with someone in their vicinity having it, donation links or information on preventing the non-genetic causes, it would still be unbearable, but at least the person posting it would look a tad less like a repost robot.
