Success as defined by media

edited 2011-10-26 17:32:08 in Media

Why is it so often skewered towards popular entertainment pursuits? Are science, philosophy, etc. too mundane for them?

(at the moment, I am thinking of the premise to Ice Princess. Naturally, as an Engineering Physics undergraduate, I am not amused)

The masses are attracted by simple glamour and fame. It annoys me very much, too.

Milos may be right, but I think part of the reason why media tends to focus on that kind of success is that it is a bit more entertaining for an audience. I feel like athletic competitions and the training that they require tend to be more exciting for an audience to watch than say doing a bunch of trials in a lab, studying, or writing a dissertation.

Your mileage may vary on that though and that is not to say that science, philosophy, and such are not personally fulfilling. I think they definitely are. I just feel like that kind of fulfillment is more difficult to capture in a film.

Reading the premise of Ice Princess, I think that you could have a field day with that movie from a feminist perspective by pointing to the idea that it discourages girls from wanting to pursue academics.

  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    I think Louie's got it.

It's much more dramatic and entertaining to watch someone be a champion ice skater than it is to watch them set up control groups and calculate numerical results, even if the theme of "do what you love" or "You can be anything you want" is the same.  Not to say it can't be done, but it's more difficult.  I remember October Sky being a good example of it done well, but it's not as easy to make compelling.
  • Kamen Rider MADOKA
Bluh bluh panem et circenses, etc

The media focuses on popular entertainment because they're two sides of the same coin. And sometimes the greatest heroes are those left unsung.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.

To elaborate, popular entertainment is generally made by popular entertainers. Go figure.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Much the same reason so many books have writers as protagonists, and all of Palhunik's novels have complete scum-sucking pieces of shit for protagonists.
  • You can change. You can.

    FTFY
  • They're somethin' else.
    lol Palahniuk is literally gay.
  • You can change. You can.
    that's the joke~
  • They're somethin' else.
    Hence my lol
  • But you never had any to begin with.
Literally gay? As opposed to... metaphorically gay?
  • You can change. You can.
Some people are only gay to make a statement on society, don cha know?
  • Anything in a visual medium about a female ice skater will allow for the casting/drawing of an attractive woman who gets to wear short skirts a lot. Basically, fanservice.

That isn't so common in engineering or philosophy.

Good people don't end up here.
How many are there that aren't skewed toward entertainment or sports? The only one I can think of is October Sky.

Granted, rocketry is pretty fun to watch, too.

Hell, they do that in the rare movies about more cerebral pursuits too.  When I think about revolutionizing analysis of baseball statistics through careful study to save money on recruiting, I have to admit Brad fucking Pitt isn't the first one that came to mind.

Or Russel Crowe in A Beautiful Mind.
