Inevitable smugness on either side of a political issue

edited 2011-10-26 16:16:05 in General
They're somethin' else.
I was watching a bit of the Occupy Oakland Riots. And well, as much as I know that I should NOT READ COMMENT SECTIONS EVER, I just go on and look at a train wreck /cache'd response.

Why does this happen, guys? Why are people from any side of a political debate so fucking stupid. Why is it considered such a cop-out for me to try my hardest to take a third option when the two given choices are that fucking stupid?

  • You can change. You can.
    >Protest in university still continues
    >Students still think that screaming political slogans from god knows when will somehow shake the government
    >Government still thinks that students don't even deserve to be listened to.

    Colombia everyone!

^ Replace Colombia with Serbia, and you've got the current situation here. The fact that most student representatives are self-proclaimed anarchists and communists doesn't help their reputation.

  • ^There's an issue if people will automatically dismiss your opinions based on your political leaning. Of course, if they are being unproductively radical about it, then that's a whole different issue.

"Why is it considered such a cop-out for me to try my hardest to take a third option when the two given choices are that fucking stupid?"

Because of people's faith in the false dichotomy fallacy. Alternatively, because the two sides are "With us" and "Against us."

Admittedly, most of the students here have avoided the usual pratfalls that most students perform in protests (Threats, confrontational attitude, not caring for reasoning or trying to meet the other side halfway)

but it still falls flat based on execution alone.

^^ They're the "Death to capitalism, power to the people!" types. It does tend to attract other students, but isn't contributing much towards their cause.

    ^ The same here.

  • Yeah, that rhetoric isn't going to get you far.

There isn't actually anything suggesting that the people at Occupy Oakland had different political leanings from the regular Occupy demographic, which is not mostly communists and anarchists.
