sometimes my mind assigns genders to inanimate objects and I don't understand why
For example: On the way home from school earlier, I saw a police car stopped on a side street. My first thought was "ha, she's gonna catch her some speeders!"
Now, I didn't actually see the officer in the car, so I have no idea if they were a man or a woman. So why did my mind default to "she"? Because the car was a Chevy Impala, and that feels like a more "feminine" police car than the more common Ford Crown Victoria.
...I don't get it.

Computers: Women (thanks to Startrek)
Telescopes: German men because... I dunno why.
See also German, and for that matter most European languages other than English, which allocate gender to objects based on... nothing really.
The only real equivalent in English is referring to ships, and sometimes aircraft, as "she".
