  • What is the distinction between a hollow character and, say, a flat character?
  • You can change. You can.
Well, when I'm thinking hollow character, I'm thinking a character who doesn't have any depth to him. He has traits, like stubborness and hot headedness, but it's literally nothing but those things. He behaves the same way in every situation.

A flat character is, from what I understand, a character who doesn't evolve and change.

Both of these things are doable and feasible. And they can be done excellently, but they demand a lot from their writers to pull off correctly

or they are writing a comedy. :p

No, one that doesn't evolve and change is a static character (as opposed to dynamic).  A flat character is one who only really has one aspect or a very simple characterization used to define the character, as opposed to a round character who is given more thorough characterization showing off more sides of 'eir personality.

Dunno what a hollow character is, other than a certain class of Bleach characters.

hmmm, hollow isn't used as an actual term in literature.

My mistake. Normally the concept of a flat character is referred to as a "hollow" character in spanish, so I translated rather than using the English term.
