Real-Time Strategy, anyone?

IN WHICH I LAZILY COPY VIVI

Anyway, just as Vivi asked for RPGs, I'm asking for RTSs here. I saw Supreme Commander for 8 bucks at a used book store, and somehow this has sparked an interest in playing more RTSs.

So, what's good?

(I also started sketching out the ideas for an RTS of my own. If anyone cares, I can mention a few things about it)

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Command and Conquer Red Alert 2 + Yuri's Revenge.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
    Starcraft. Both of them.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I'm not one for RTSes. I lack the patience to micromanage, and don't really feel much thrill at watching things that aren't me risk their life and limb. Also, I'm not a virgin.

In any case, if you have an X-box/PS3 Brutal Legend is worth checking out for the setting, story, the awesome music, and I honestly found being immersed in the battle to be a lot more fun than point and clicking.
  • If that don't work, use more gun.
    Pikmin.  Both of them.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
    DAWN OF WAR.

    BUY BOTH I AND II.

BUY ALL THE EXPANSIONS (except Soulstorm).

    DO IT. DO EEEEEEEEEET.
  • Till shade is gone, till water is gone, into the Shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath, to spit in Sightblinder’s eye on the last Day.
Brutal Legend is a lot of fun.

I'm not big on RTS in general, but I love every RTS Blizzard has ever made.

So, while you guys are suggesting some good stuff, is Supreme Commander any good? Cause 8 bucks for that game is a pretty damn good deal
  • Warcraft III, endless available content, some of which is actually pretty good.

    I'm no good at RTS's. I'm more of a turn-based 4X fellow.

Still, I play Warcraft III regularly.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
    Seconding Dawn of War.

    Kamen Rider MADOKA
I also suggest Rise of Nations if you want a mix of RTS and 4X.

And Dawn of War and, of course, Age of Empires. Historical RTS FTW
  • $80+ per session
Warcraft III, DotA, Brutal Legend, League of Legends.

Total War is a good alternative to Age of Empires. It's more of a turn-based strategy meets real-time tactics designed around campaign gameplay.

More to the point, Medieval II allows me to play as the Holy Roman Empire. Huzzah. :D
  • Kamen Rider MADOKA
I hear Shogun II's pretty nice too.

    Thane of rum-guzzling and necromancy

I thought it was fricking awesome, in single player at least. I loved the massive scale and all that. Yet the multiplayer element was non-existent. I couldn't update the game or anything, because gas powered games' portal was so profoundly retarded.

I also suggest Rise of Nations if you want a mix of RTS and 4X.

    Seconding this.

  • Age of Empires and then AoE II were my childhood, basically. Well, some other games too...but you gotta understand, I didn't play console or handheld games as a kid. I assisted my dad with his PC games. When we played AoE, I was always standing by not only as a spectator but also armed with the manual and that handy folding sheet to provide info.

Oh wait, this is a recommendation thread? Well, um, yeah, the whole Age of Empires series (never played III) and I liked Age of Mythology too! And Starcraft, and I guess Starcraft II, though I never even came close to having that myself.

Apparently Warcraft III and Dawn of War are great too. And I had a friend in high school who loved Supreme Commander (this was when it was new, btw) but I've never seen it played.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
^^^ Yeah, Shogun II influenced me to acquire Medieval II.
  • Thane of rum-guzzling and necromancy

I wish there existed a combination of Empire Earth's breadth, Rise of Nation's quality, and Command and Conquer's combat system. The first two EE games had their hearts in the right place, but have too many things wrong with them gameplay wise. The third was horrible. Rise of Nations was polished to a much better standard to Empire Earth, but its resource system was flawed, and the combat system and unit caps drained the fun out of it.

  • Starcraft. Both of them.

    Also, Warcraft III.

Also, Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3. I don't like the gameplay that much, but the story is fun (alternatively, watch a Let's Play).
  • C&C Generals, that game is actually quite fun.
  • ^^^Do I spy an AoE cheat code? Those were the greatest. Never really got to use them much in the original game, but in Age of Kings I had so much fun with them in the map editor. A killer monkey, killer car, and ultrafast naked villager? Awesome.

There were really quite a few more in the original, weren't there? Yeah, the car mentioned above, the two types of guys with guns, the baby on tricycle with shotgun, the robot...and so many other codes that I apparently never knew about! I would love to get my hands on a copy of AoE some time soon...
  • No rainbow star
    Total Annihilation Kingdoms

It's abandonware now, as is the expansion. It's quite fun
  • Tiberian Sun & expansion, Red Alert 2 & expansion, Warcraft 3 & The Frozen Throne(especially the last one has custom content that'll last you for years).

  • Kamen Rider MADOKA
especially the last one has custom content that'll last you for years

    >implying DotA isn't the only thing keeping WC3 alive nowadays
  • If you're new to the entire thing, there's a huge backlog of custom campaigns to wade through(Wanderers of Sorceria alone is bigger than the campaigns of the two games combined). But then I've always been more of a solo player than a multiplayer one.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
Europa Universalis III Wait, that's grand strategy with real-time.

Er... Company of Heroes? Made by Relic, the developers of Dawn of War.
  • Kamen Rider MADOKA
And they reused a lot of stuff from CoH for Dawn of War II, mind you.

Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen and Ogre Battle 64: Person of Lordly Caliber are great, if you don't mind lots of complicated RPG elements and constant micro-management. Considering you like Disgaea, I think these games will be a perfect fit for you.

    I suck at RTSes. I prefer turn-based.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
^^I would say that Company of Heroes is more of a transition point between Dawn of War I and II.
