I don't think this has ever been something other than a setup to a joke. And yet, the structure of the joke depends on the assumption that it's a subversion (in the TVTropes sense). But due to the lack of straight (again, in the TVTropes sense) uses, the joke undoes itself.

I usually like these sort of gags, but after realizing this they've rather lost their punch.

    Haven't you ever heard "At least he died doing what he loved"? Something to that effect has been said of Steve Irwin.

    Gelzo: Yeah, but that's a bit different. Though it can be used for the same kind of gag.

    Tnophelia: Was it in that movie? I was starting to think it was a "stand alone complex", but that makes a bit more sense.

    To me it has pretty much the same meaning. It's just the version I used emphasizes the activity was something the victim enjoyed.
