"He died as he lived"

I don't think this has ever been something other than a setup to a joke. And yet, the structure of the joke depends on the assumption that it's a subversion (in the TVTropes sense). But due to the lack of straight (again, in the TVTropes sense) uses, the joke undoes itself.

I usually like these sort of gags, but after realizing this they've rather lost their punch.

  • Haven't you ever heard "At least he died doing what he loved"? Something to that effect has been said of Steve Irwin.
  • Gelzo: Yeah, but that's a bit different. Though it can be used for the same kind of gag.

Tnophelia: Was it in that movie? I was starting to think it was a "stand alone complex", but that makes a bit more sense.
  • I remember something about the end of the movie, his friend saying something along those lines.

    Also Braveheart.
  • To me it has pretty much the same meaning. It's just the version I used emphasizes the activity was something the victim enjoyed.
  • a little muffled
I don't see why this has to be a subversion.
