The king in chess sets never has a pointy crown

But pointy crowns are the standard style of crown everywhere.

Though maybe that's because queens are cooler.  They are the lightning bruisers of the chess board.  Kings are the load.

Comments

  • Chess should have princesses.  Princesses are cooler than queens.  Mhm.

    "Kings are the load."

Actually, the king becomes very important to endgame strategy. An easy way to tell a Chess noob from a veteran is that an experienced player knows that no piece is useless.

Also, using character trope names to describe chess => Narm.

Give them pleasure - the same pleasure they have when they wake up from a nightmare.

This pleases meh! :D Speaking of which, I should photoshop a crown onto my avatar.
  • No rainbow star
    ^ Queens have more power

Also only REAL Princesses get crowns

When do I get my crown? Does it arrive via UPS?

I'm sorry, queens are not lightning bruisers.

    They are glass cannons.
  • You can change. You can.

    oh the irony

with that said, the reason is that the Queen is a more powerful piece. As simple as that. It's not a better piece, though. More range won't save your ass when it isn't versatile. Like the Knight/Horse/However it is called in English.

I'm pretty sure it's just "knight".

pawn, rook, knight, bishop, queen, king.

Yep, Knight has the advantage of being unblockable when putting the King in Check, thus forcing him to move. Also, from my experience, pawns are actually the most important piece since their positioning can limit the opponent's moves significantly when arranged right. And of course the whole promotion thing, but that only comes into play during the endgame.

Coz the King piece is based on a hoop crown. Pointy crown were seen as less blingy, and therefore inferior, and thus in later medieval times/renaissance became the crowns of lesser nobles (queens and princes, hence the queen piece having one), while ultra blingy hoop crowns became the one the kind piece sported.

King piece's crown matches that used by all the biggest monarchs (British, French, Holy Roman Emperor) of the late middle ages and onwards

^ Yeah, I figured that was the reason.  It's all over those old portraits of kings.
  • Rook! Bishop! Knight! King! And big crown queenie! C'mon everypawny, let's go!

You know what would be awesome? If chess pieces had hit points.

They do.  They have 1 HP each.
