TV Tropes's fetish for Hype Backlash

edited 2011-03-08 21:00:15 in General

The default opinion on anything that's popular (except maybe Homestuck) seems to be "overrated", sometimes to a frankly irrational extent. Any time anybody refers to something as "overrated" on the forums, ten dozen billion other people will flock to them with Me Too posts, till you get the impression that the entire forum is made up of thin-skinned contrarians.

Alright, I'm exaggerating, but still.

If there's not an image macro that goes "Well I never!" with some guy wearing a monocole, there should be.
  • I knew it wouldn't be long before you made this thread. :P

Also, yeah, that is pretty annoying. Reminds me of a Gaga quote I heard a while back that I can't remember. That, and I don't want to end up getting lynched / ostracized for bringing up Lady Gaga.

    ...Wait a minute...

    SHIT

I'm not so much annoyed at popular works themselves as I am annoyed at people thinking that bringing something up 100 more times will convince me to look into something any more than the first time (give or take 2). Particularly if those 100 more times are done with no regard for even trying to acknowledge what might appeal to me.

    I don't think there's much hype backlash.

I've seen too many discussions about Lucky Star, Haruhi, Touhou, and Avatar for Hype Backlash to be a major problem.

There is some popularity backlash, but that seems to be rooted in the perception that most of everyone else is using a Touhou/anime-girl/Homestuck avatar.

"but that seems to be rooted in the perception that most of everyone else is using a Touhou/anime-girl/Homestuck avatar."

    Hence the "thin-skinned contrarians" part.

  • "except maybe Homestuck"

    Well you're wrong there.

Indeed, Homestuck definitely gets this reaction a lot. It doesn't help that most of the time people trying to promote it to others aren't very good at coming up with reasons that people who don't already like it would find convincing.

For instance, this page, and the quoting of Dave's counter-trolling of Tavros. It's funny (YMMV, of course) in the context "he was provoked, and the person trying to rile him up got more than he bargained for", but merely quoting it at someone will just display crudeness, which isn't that great when you don't know anything else about Dave.
  • It was pretty great, but I'm not exactly sure what makes it stand out so much to the fans here compared to the other stuff. Maybe it's just because it isn't spoilery.
  • I thought Hype Backlash was SomethingAwful's schtick.
  • It isn't all the time. We like Minecraft for instance.
  • I was going to say that I do not like Minecraft, but it took me like 5 tries to find the correct punctuation to put in "don't" so I guess there are forces beyond my control preventing me from saying that.

So I guess I do like Minecraft.
  • Because you never know what you might see.
@ Gelzo: It was the page that made me actually laugh out loud and pretty much cemented Dave as my favourite character.

Personally I'd go with a Flash page if people were curious, since they're the most visually impressive, usually.  This one, perhaps, or maybe this one.  The latter is spoilery, but I doubt they'd understand it fully out of context.
