I want to try getting into Doctor Who again.

Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
A few months ago I noticed that Netflix had the first season of the new Doctor Who series up for streaming. Thinking that I might as well see what Tv Tropes, the UK, and nerds in general saw in this series. So, I watched the first couple of episodes.

I...wasn't particularly impressed. The episodes I watched felt kinda cheesy, plot wise, and the setting and costumes felt rather tacky. Not to mention  I really disliked Rose right from the start for reasons I can't adequately explain. Christopher Eccleston's performance wasn't good enough to make up for all that, so I dropped the series.

Now, I want to try and give the series another shot. My question is, however, should I continue where I left off, or would I miss anything by skipping right to the David Tennant era?

  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
The Matt Smith era is pretty much created as another picking up point. Aside from a few unimportant in-jokes that go the original series it should be fine.

    You can change. You can.
Ninth is an acquired taste. I loved him and Eccleston is amazing, but it takes some time to get into

Ten starts pretty badly. I'd argue that season 2 is the worst season of the new series by far. Most of the episoes were rather lacking for me. Although the Impossible Planet two parter is goddamn amazing.

And Rose is sadly the archetypical nu who companion, so if you find her grating, then Martha won't be better.

so, my recommendation will be The Eleventh Hour. Moffat makes it so it feels as another intro to the series and almost everything before season 5 doesn't matter except for the Dalek invasion at the end of season 4 and even that is not entirely too hard to understand (The daleks attacked and everyone saw them. --shrug--)

After that, you can try watching the older episodes. That's what I did. And I enjoyed it a lot more that way.

So, start at The Eleventh Hour? What season and what episode is that?

    Season 5, episode 1

Okay, anyone know any good streaming sites? I don't have TV right now, Netflix doesn't go that far, and I can't torrent lest I get caught and fined by my college. >_>

I'm pretty sure season 5 is in Netflix. It's just a year back, actually.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Yeah, it's on Netflix. I know because I watched it on Netflix instant queue yesterday.

Oh good. But I suppose I still need a place to watch the newer episodes once I get caught up, wouldn't I?

Yes. Cuevana is your savior. Although they don't have Day of the Moon, so, yeah.

I can upload them to my dropbox if you want or something. --shrug--
