    Unless I'm missing something that makes Dark Souls more un-Touhou-like than, say, 300, so are a lot of other things that do get crossed with Touhou.

    Because it has a charimastic cast, I suppoose.

    Same reason Homestuck's trolls, MLP ponies and so on get so much attention. Also, the visual design helps a lot. And it's cutesy as fuck.

    Also, some memes are more difficult than others to invoke.

    Thinking of Cirno every time the number 9 appears is easy.

    On the other hand, Russian-doll-style nesting (i.e. Xzibit/Inception) happens much more rarely and is much more circumstantial.  It (gasp!) actually takes some good bit of thinking to produce a reference where none exists beforehand.

    Touhou attracts fans who then make fanworks because it attracts fans who
    then make fanworks. The amount of these works that get made are enough
    to get people in, some of which will want in on the fanwork thing. A
    critical fanmass, if you will.



    What I still don't understand is how it got said fandom on the first
    place. People suggest it's because of its untapped potential and stuff
    (specially on the drawing department), but I still can't see why it
    stood out.
