I think the Sun would have a ways to go (Probably not a far ways, but still) before it could really be compared to FOX.

I read the Sun on occasion. Cheaper newspaper, and easier to read format. Also has better want ads in the classifides. (All the blue-collar stuff.) And I'm sure there is a bias, but it isn't as painfully obvious as I've seen with Fox news articles. Then again, I grew up Conservative and still hold some of the ideals, so I do recognize I'm probably blinded to them.

Still, my mother was talking to me about this recently. She heard a quote from the head of one of the other news corporations, saying something along the lines that people who watch the new Sun News Network have something wrong with their heads. She was rather annoyed with that, especially when the media network called asking if she'd like to subscribe to their newspaper. "No, sorry, the head of your company thinks I'm an idiot."

I never know what I'm supposed to believe anymore.

I'll say that the conservative ideal that places importance on self-reliance is respectable, but it isn't always applicable when it comes to providing for people who just aren't in a position to improve their lives or care for themselves on their own.

I also don't get why reducing the size of government is considered so important.

I was going to write a post detailing my issues with conservative ideals, but I realised I'd end up with something essentially essay lengthed.

Reducing government size comes from the conservative annoyance of hearing about people who barely work in office for ten years, and then retire with a cushy pension for the rest of their lives.

How much of this is true is questionable, but it's the idea.

Now, that applies more for the upper echelons. As for general government employees, it's the thought that a government should be run like a business. The fear that while a private enterprise will have to carefully manage the number of workers it hires and the amount of work it has, that in a government bureaucracy,  they'll just hire more people. All on the Taxpayer's dime. Especially annoying when they're unionised and half of them don't do any work.

That's the thought process, at least.

I have to say I disagree with that thought process.

Firstly in private companies there are people who barely work and retire with golden handshakes, most of them are obviously in the upper echelons of management/board/etc.

I feel that a government should not be be run fully like a business, their primary priority should be the welfare of citizens and any institutions they run should reflect that. With the govt owned institutions there should be focus on quality of the service, however there should be a focus on cost/efficiency but it should come second.

For example the UK railways used to be govt run (British Rail) and it was run in such a manner that ticket prices were affordable, and smaller branch lines (which are 'less profitable') were able to stay open due to money made from the bigger main lines.

British Rail was broken up and privatised and you can tell it is being run like a business, at detriment to the public. With smaller coaches and higher ticket prices (the companies preferred ticket pricing scheme) and fewer trains to fewer locations.

The UK Sun has amongst it's 'news' small jokes in the borders.

They are the the most tedious jokes I've read, also reading the Sun is a laugh anyhow.

Alas, the only other major Edmonton newspaper is the Edmonton Journal, which still has a National Post stooge (Lorne Gunter) as one of the editorial writers.
