Roads where people routinely drive under the limit

edited 2011-10-07 00:27:40 in Meatspace
The speed limit on State Route 16 is 50 mph all the way from Pataskala.

Once you cross over I-270, there is one more "Speed Limit 50" sign, followed by two traffic lights. Shortly beyond that is a "35 mph zone ahead" sign, and finally a "Speed Limit 35" sign immediately before a third traffic light at Hamilton Road. The way the signs are posted, it's laid out perfectly--all you have to do is slow down as you approach the Hamilton Road light. If it's red, you stop. If it's green, you go on through but continue at the lower speed.

But for some reason, most people slow down immediately after crossing the freeway, long before any of the signs indicate the reduced speed. I don't know why they do it, but it drives me insane.

  • Also, the fact that the speed limit is 50 mph or whatever, doesn't necessarily mean that it's actually safe to drive along at that speed all the time. You're supposed to be taking account of the cars around you, what speed they're doing and so on. And it takes time to slow down safely - you can't just slam on the brakes.

Finally, if there's a set of traffic lights before the 35 mph zone anyway, people will have to slow down for those turning red.

  • True, but between the second and third traffic light there's a long straightaway with no cross streets and only one or two driveways...easily long enough to get back up to speed and still slow down in time for the lower limit.
