This Catch-22 that's been set up about criticism

edited 2011-03-06 22:35:57 in General

Namely, about research/having reasons as to why you don't like it. If you don't do the research about the thing that you're criticizing, then you're complaining about shows you haven't watched. But then if you do do the research and present specific examples as to the things you don't like about it, you're accused of paying too much attention to the thing you supposedly don't like, when you could be watching something you do like.

Why must people make criticism so difficult?

  • Because The Complainer Is Always Wrong.
  • You could always do half the research, but then people complain about you supposedly not knowing what you're talking about and not giving the work a chance. God, you can't complain about anything anymore.
  • They're somethin' else.
Either its "If you hate it so much, why are you watching it" or its "don't knock it till you've tried it".

    You just can't win.
  • "Dude, don't knock it till you've tried it.

...Wait, you already have? Why? What's wrong with you? If you hate it so much, leave it alone! Jesus Christ!"
  • No rainbow star
Isn't that some sort of fallacy?
  • K-On! Sucks.

Why? Have you watched it yet?

No. I read reviews and summaries though. Don't like it.

Except reviews aren't the same as the show and summaries SUMMARIZE things. Just watch the show and decide it for yourself.

    ...

    ...

    I watched it. It sucks.

    Why?

    It's stupid. I don't like it.

    Well your mileage may vary.

I don't get why people would like that show other than the moe moe garbage.

Some people like moe, that doesn't make it garbage.

    It's pandering to otaku.

Is there something wrong with having the audience connect with the characters?

    They are empty gimmicky characters.

What did you expect? 5 star professional writers to create perfectly realistic characters in a drama-filled saga about the lives of 5 teenagers?

No, but the characters shouldn't be ineffectual and boring.

The reason you think they are boring is because you don't like the type of show to begin with. Do you even like Anime?

I watch Hellsing, Wolf's Rain and Soul Eater. THOSE are good animes.

Your mileage may vary on what a good anime is.

It's better than pointless moe shit.

At least K-On is better than Hellsing when it comes to writing characters that aren't God Mode Sues.

At least Hellsing has fans that don't buy body pillows of the titular character and fuck them.

Not everyone who watches K-On fucks pillows.

My mistake. Jerk off to pornographic jerkcomics of the characters online.

It's called hentai, and no. Not all of the fans do that.

Most of them do. Do you have proof that they don't?

    I don't.

You are lying. You fuck pillows and jerk off to porn just as much as they do.

How do I know you don't jerk off to Hellsing?

Because I am not a faggot.

You watch anime about seductive well dressed vampires. You are halfway there. At least K-On has girls.

Hellsing has girls too, and they are hotter and more stronger than your pathetic high school moeshit girls.

All the more to choose from than your ONE girl in the story. Plenty of long haired men to choose from though, if that counts.

It counts for fags like you.

Ad Hominem already? Wow that didn't take long...

Soul Eater is a good anime?

Isn't it just generic, boring, shonen fighting stuff? -has never watched the anime and never will, and has only read the first 3 volumes of the manga with no intent to read any more-
  • Your Mileage May Vary on shonen being boring and generic.
  • Your Mileage May Vary on these pants making my butt look big. Fuck what you say, my ass looks sooooo big in this. Stupid asshole, trying to trick me into buying unflattering pants.
  • Buy Hot Topic pants, lest you be fat.
  • If it means anything

It seems better to accept criticism from someone who's read the work in question rather than someone who hasn't. "I read it and I didn't like it, and here's why:" Is perfectly acceptable. "If you hate it so much, why did you read it?" Is not an acceptable response, and people need to quit saying it.
  • "If you hate it so much, why did you read it?"

"Because I didn't hate it at first."

    Silence is golden.

"If you hate it so much, why did you read it?" is not an acceptable retord, yes.

However, "Why are you still obssesively following this series and pestering us when you already know damn full well that you don't like it?" is a perfectly fine thing to say.

  • ""Why are you still obssesively following this series and pestering us when you already know damn full well that you don't like it?" I will use this from now on.
  • ^^ Aye, I'll agree with that.
  • I watch Hellsing, Wolf's Rain and Soul Eater. THOSE are good animes

Wolf's Rain is pretty good, I heard Soul Eater is OK, and Hellsing is fun. But the fact is that Wolf's rain is slow and at times nonsensical, Soul Eater is pretty generic shonen and Hellsing is a gorefest with barely any characterization, plot, or character development.

I really hope this isn't an actual conversation of yours, because the Insane Troll Logic is strong there.
  • Nope, it wasn't an actual conversation. I haven't watched any of the animes I wrote in that paragraph so I have no idea whether or not i was accurate in describing any of them.

"However, "Why are you still obssesively following this series and pestering us when you already know damn full well that you don't like it?" is a perfectly fine thing to say."

Well that depends on what your personal threshold of "obsessively following" is, and some people can be pretty thin-skinned about that.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
I have absolutely no shame in saying that I watch The Sacred Blacksmith.

And I will indeed ridicule Cecily's breastplate breastsplate.  Hilariously bad design there.
  • Yeah, that was... kind of hilarious, yeah.

I stopped watching that for some reason, but loli-elf Aki Toyosaki is reason enough for me to watch it, so... yeah.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    ^ pixplz

It's probably less hilarious and more stupid.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    That just looks stupid.

    > gigantic boob explosion
    wtf?
  • Huge boobs air up and explode

-downloads the first episode of Queen's Blade-

Wait... which series was it?  There are apparently like 3 different Queen's Blade animes.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Suddenly, you gave me a second reason not to watch this series.
  • edited 2011-03-07 20:34:31
Amazingly, I'm downloading the first episode from Queen's Blade faster from Megaupload than I can stream it from whatever website it's embedded from on watchanimeon.com

Also amazingly, but in a different way, that still means it will take at least half an hour for it to finish downloading.
  • "Isn't it just generic, boring, shonen fighting stuff?"

The plot is incredibly generic, but the visuals are interesting. It's pretty adorable for shonen.

"But the fact is that Wolf's rain is slow and at times nonsensical"

    too deep for u
