And you really, REALLY don't want to do it.

  • Try the same, but with shitty 300-word assignment.

    I know that feel, bro.

  • ^ Standard response to my assignments telling me to write anything more specific than a ballpark figure.
  • -has a 4 page essay due in 2 days-

    -hasn't started-

    -knows that feel, bro-

  • It's annoying precisely because it's so small. You can't ask for an "in-depth analysis" and then have that as a word count which you can only exceed by 10%.

    DYRE: Same here! HIGH FIVE!

IA: I see your point, but it's not something that really should be complained about, unless it's a really hard subject, because it probably comes off as petty to the rest.
  • You can change. You can.
I don't see what's petty about that. Having a word limit that you must not surpass is always bad, because you need to start thinking of the actual composition of the essay and what matters, rather than just inflate it with secondary ideas till it reach the word goal that you're asked for.

300 words is half a page, give or take. Spanish assignments used to be just fifty words shy of that, in a spanish 2 class (a bunch of 14 year olds taking it).

It might be tough to get the idea across properly, but time wise, I really don't think it's as consuming as multiple pages.

Especially in places like this, where people are naturally going to be complaining about big things, because those are what tend to be more important to their grade.

I'm not saying that it's harder or easier, just that many people are probably not going to be too sympathetic about it.
  • You can change. You can.
    Ah.

eh. Why would you care for other people's sympathy unless you're fishing for it
  • On structure: essays need to be internally coherent no matter what their length, I've never really needed padding. I just find medium-length essays(2500-3000 words) a lot easier to write since it's the standard format I'm used to.

WILL YOU PITY ME DAMMIT CANT U SEE HOW HARD MY LIFE IS

well, duh, but it means that you have to still work under a different structure rather than work under the one you're used to (Lengthy essays where you present the different subconcepts associated to the subject you're working, in my case)
  • My mistake, it sounded a bit like advocation of padding.
  • Give them pleasure - the same pleasure they have when they wake up from a nightmare.

    Lightweight.

I've decided that since my internet posting style is more or less semi-formal anyway and I have a tendency to intersperse big words with little ones (as well as an interest in making things sound interesting but still retain meaning), I should just write these essays as if I were posting something on my own blog or something.
