Bad colour schemes in games

edited 2011-09-25 18:04:43 in Media
But you never had any to begin with.
Sometimes, games have questionable colour schemes. Like Battle Garegga and its brown... well, everything (brown bullets and brown background!). Which is kind of a liability in a shmup. Or Shin Megami Tensei I and its endless corridors that all look the same, whether that be blue, green, or salmon. (Only 2 buildings in the entire game have multiple colours for the corridors.)

...Or the monstrosity that inspired this thread.

  • If you must eat a phoenix, boil it, do not roast it. This only encourages their mischievous habits.
I think my eyes just exploded.
  • EETS SO PEEENK
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
It's because the NES had a very limited range of colors so designers tried to be creative.

This was actually the big advantage the Mega Drive boasted.
  • But you never had any to begin with.
SMT I was on the SNES. Super Darius/Darius Plus (Where the screenshot is from) was on the Super CD/PC Engine.

    Neither had an excuse.

^^ Of course, I'm pretty sure that isn't an NES screenshot (though it's probably something equally limited, so whatever, same thing).

    EDIT: Ninja'd.

^^Oh nevermind then. Damn, Atlus has always been hella weird.
  • Kamen Rider MADOKA
Atlus has always been hella weird.

That's also why they've never moved past the niche platform.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^Bear in mind that in Japan, their games outsell Final Fantasy games by a pretty decent margin. They're aiming for the local market, while Final Fantasy is more of an export series.
  • Kamen Rider MADOKA
Just like how Squeenix still releases Dragon Quest?
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Speaking of Atlus, I don't get the appeal of Etrian Odyssey.  You have to map the dungeon yourself.  That's just lame.

The rest is halfway enjoyable, except for the fact that spells become more expensive in very restrictive ways (your MP cap is way low and leveling up spells too quickly really makes a big deal of it).

As for that screenshot, I found the pink rather hilarious.  Then again, I find obnoxious colors hilarious.

Since when? I thought Final Fantasy consistently sold the most next to Dragon Quest.

Nope. Final Fantasy is the second-best-selling Square Enix series in Japan, not the second-best-selling JRPG.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Then what's the ranking of best-selling JRPGs in Japan, and worldwide?
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^^Pretty sure that in Japan it's DQ, Megaten, FF.

Worldwide, meanwhile, all I know is FF is #1.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Megaten includes the Persona subseries, right?

I was actually more curious where stuff like Pokémon, MMBN, Etrian Odyssey, Disgaea, SaGa, Mana, Fire Emblem, Tales, Phantasy Star, etc.

@funnyguts: I can map the dungeon any way i want there.  Here, I have to...draw walls and panels separately?  what the heck?

They call me Rate Miser, whatever I see... turns overrated in my eyes...
OP: There's another arcade version of Battle Garegga that replaces most of the bullets with normal yellow circles, especially those in brown terrain. IIRC, Tvtropes did say something about Battle Garegga's port having a colorful bullets toggle. Oh, and that boss is just plain ugly.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Yeah, Persona is part of Megaten, though I don't think they put "Shin Megami Tensei" in front of the title in Japan.

Hmmm...I dunno where Pokemon falls, actually. It might be above the ones I listed...
  • Kamen Rider MADOKA
Pokemon would probably outsell all those save Dragon Quest. Even though it's not a traditional JRPG by any vector.
