Uncanny Valley Posting

edited 2011-03-04 20:13:27 in General

There seems to be at least one of these users on every major forum. They post in many threads, but only with barely grammatically correct one-liners only tangentially related to the topic. They have little regard for forum etiquette, necroing threads just to spout some inane babble and using disturbing avatars. They regurgitate the same ideas, often in bad taste, constantly. Any attempt to engage in conversation with such users leads them to simply spout the same thing over and over again, even when you're trying to argue with them. Worse, they never seem to even care what you're saying to them. Insult them as hard as you can, and they'll still act blissfully unaware. And then after a while, a bunch of such users go One Winged Angel and trash the place before the banhammer gets them. (aside from the last one, this was a description of yurifanboy-sama, but there a bunch of other users with traits like this)

What is it about the Internet that spawns such solipsistic individuals that seem more machine than man? Even when they're not trolls, their omnipresence and unwillingness to truly engage with the community is so frustrating.

Comments

  • I immediately thought of secretist, myself. He's the only example of this sort of thing I can think of, right now.

The other TVTropes user I was thinking of was miru. Nothing anyone says will stop him from spouting his crazy Sonic-related ideas.

And there are a bunch of other loonies like this lurking around the Net. I've encountered them on Gamespot, Bulbagarden, and Spore forums (among the ones I've been on for a significant amount of time).

  • The robot avatar made me think this was some kind of meta-joke.
  • Kichigai birthday!!
I thought this was going to be about a supercomputer that goes on forums and no one guesses it's a computer but everyone is creeped out by it and can't explain why

It is, to some extent. What I listed were the symptoms.
  • "Nakama" was like this with radio and posting in the middle of the night.
secretist was like this with pokemon stats.
    miru is...
lemurian is slowly becoming this, as is Nornagest.
  • Secretist and Yuri-fanboy sama are the same person according to IPs, and secretist himself. To me he seems like "the man who's read everything but learned nothing". I'm sticking neutral with this description, it's not meant as an insult.
  • So, just to clarify, by "uncanny valley posting", you mean a poster that doesn't seem entirely human?

I wonder if they're all the same person.

    Food for thought...
  • I am not uncanny valley because i am not a faggot

  • I thought smokie saved the "you are a faggot" for people who liked Elfen Lied.

And I thought he preferred "kill yourself".
  • Yes, but Tnoph wouldn't know that, since she never interacted with him.
  • Hell I don't know. Who was smokie anyway besides a banned fan hater?

Hell I don't know. Who was smokie anyway besides a banned fan hater?

Who was smokie anyway besides a banned fan hater?

    Who was smokie

    Something like that.
  • Holy shit, Smokie was Ironhide?

No wonder he hated Elfen Lied.
  • I always imagined him as looking like Rageguy.
  • I didn't know that Fast Eddie banned a transformer from the wiki. Shouldn't the be kind of pissed?
  • Silence is golden.

"The other TVTropes user I was thinking of was miru. Nothing anyone says will stop him"

that's because he's a troll (how many times do I have to say this), check his userpage.

  • Smokie had a very specific MO. He had a supernatural ability to sense and locate threads with Elfen Lied in them.

He would have hated you like no others ever could, Tnoph.
  • I thought Tnoph was Smokie attempting to pull a Leanann for a while.
  • Yeah, I don't think that'd work... unless he was trying to make a point through stealth parody.
  • I kind of think that chreen and G.G. fall under this.
