This Loser Is You

Okay, I know that being relatable is a huge plus for a character, but I'm pretty sure most of us want to relate to someone cool.

Comments

  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
They're built to be relatable as an attack on the audience. You're supposed to laugh at yourself when you see this.
  • You can change. You can.
What we want to relate to =/= what we relate to.
  • I dunno. I think it's the same logic of "guys don't relate to girls" or something.

Or, it's because a loser having awesome things happen to him is easier to make into a wank fantasy.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I don't mind the characters having earnest failings. What I do mind more is when they're selfish or cruel and we're supposed to identify with that. It's why I couldn't get very far in Community.
  • ^^ "Wank fantasy"

As this basically means a masturbatory fantasy in British English, I doubt you'd find that most over here involve losers having awesome things happening.

You're not supposed to identify with Jeff until like...three quarters into season 1 when he stops being Blackadder and starts being Rachel.

BRB killing myself for talking like Abed.
  • Captain: I'm sorry, let me reword.

Or, it's because a loser having awesome things happen to him is easier to make into a masturbatory fantasy.

    Is that clearer for you?
  • Sorry - that was a bit of a stupid thing to say, now I read it over.

    Malkavian,

    that.

Yeah, this is kind of dumb example, but that is part of the reason why I find a lot of commercials to be silly. I think that a lot of the time, the person who is supposed to represent the target audience does something stupid or is inconsiderate and yet people watching it are supposed to relate to him or her. Pretty much any commercial that shows a husband/wife or girlfriend/boyfriend relationship comes to mind, especially beer commercials.

I know I might not necessarily be in the target audience for beer commercials, but they certainly do not help discourage the "men are selfish, dumb, and do not care about women" stereotype.
