A Conflict of Memes

edited 2011-09-21 16:48:27 in Webspace
So, I managed to hear about the Homestuck meme "All of the X. All of it/them." (to quote TVT) either last (school) year from usage among my Homestuck-reading friends or at the very latest, this past summer. Only now, since school started, did I start to become aware of a similar meme that was obviously from a different source. My friend Ariel who doesn't read Homestuck uses it, causing me to think "Wait, she doesn't read Homestuck, and the tone and construction of what she's saying are all wrong for it to be from Homestuck." Meanwhile, Frances (who has essentially never even heard of Homestuck) referred to this other meme as well sometimes, and when I asked her where it was from, she said it was from Tumblr. She can be vague like that. So I went to Know Your Meme and put in "X all the Y". I found that the meme is basically this image:

Wow, that's large. Anyway, there it is, in case you had doubts as to what I'm talking about. Most importantly, I found that it was from the blog Hyperbole and a Half, which IMO is hilarious.

So there are two parallel memes out there, close enough that I nearly got them confused. Some people know one, some know the other, some know both. I'm curious, IJBM...which did you hear of first? Do you find the similarity amusing as well? Have you ever seen friends get them confused?

  • ...Wait, that's from Homesuck?

Well now I feel dumb.  I thought it was from Pokemon. >.>
  • I'm no expert, but I first heard it in that context and TV Tropes says it's something Vriska says a lot? Well anyway, I'm curious, why did you think it was from Pokemon? No insult intended or anything...I'm kind of trying to study how memes get around.
  • There's a guy in Black/White in the Poké Transfer Lab who exclaims that you "Have all the badges!  All of them!".  And, uh, soon after I saw that, I started noticing people using the "All the X!  All of them!" meme.  So, uh, I thought it was from Pokemon.

...It never crossed my mind that it was from Homestuck, although that's mostly because I, um, am not a fan, to put it lightly.  But that's not something we need to go into, ahah~

    Gentlemen?

    I bring you...CORN!

It's corn and corn alone day!
CORN is no place for a mighty warrior.

Yo dawg, I herd u liek mudkipz, so I put a meme in a meme so you can roll your eyes while you roll your eyes.

Yo dawg, I heard you like nesting, so I put two nesting memes together so you can INCEPTION.
  • You can change. You can.
    War. war never changes

    War has changed.

@Moerin: The Pokemon translation team are mostly nerds, and IIRC the translator for Diamond and Pearl is a goon.
  • Glenn and Juan appear to have introduced complete non sequitors (I know I spelled that wrong but spell check only suggests "sectors" so I dunno what to do) into this thread. I hope that was just randomness, because whatever you're doing is not what I intended the thread to be about. xD

    I was combining multiple memes.

TF2 "Gentlemen" meme + ATHF Dr. Weird "I bring you corn!" + corn and corn alone day / mighty warrior (Teen Girl Squad)

    Xzibit + mudkipz

    Xzibit + Inception
  • Yeah I see that. But to be honest, I just created this thread to try to reconcile the two "all the x" memes and see which was better-known, I guess? Though I always like the Xzibit one. I created an absolutely epic version once based on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buffalo_buffalo_Buffalo_buffalo_buffalo_buffalo_Buffalo_buffalo.

Well crap, I miss potholes. I think I need to learn more about the formatting of this forum...

Mine is simply a meme around MGS and fallout. Those are both games opening lines. they clash with each other. Therefore creating a third meme.
  • a little muffled
"All the X" is the only Homestuck meme you will catch me using. I actually picked it up from Dinosaur Comics, but I know Ryan North is an MSPA fan, so.

I like Homestuck memes. I dislike homestuck itself, but even I'm amused by, say, "WHERE DOING THIS. WHERE MAKING IT HAPEN"

Okay, that's two I'll use. I hate Homestuck, but I'll use those two.

That's not a homestuck meme; that's a Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff meme.
  • You can change. You can.
Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff is a comic within Homestuck.
  • Obviously I didn't read SBAHJ closely enough...I forgot all about that.

It's funny, actually, I think a number of things from Hyperbole and a Half have been making the rounds on Tumblr. Namely, the Alot, which I saw on Frances's Tumblr. As is typical of the way her brain works, she'd heard of both memes but since in Tumblr you rarely have any idea where the hell things are coming from, she never considered that they might be the product of the same person. I guess there's just enough of an art style difference that it's not obvious...
