No matter how much I study, my (mediocre) grades don't seem to improve. I'm the only idiot at my faculty who studies on long breaks, and I'm sure I spend more time studying in general than most, and it doesn't show.
I'll try not studying at all and see how they don't worsen.

I've learned (a little) to study more and better. Dunno how good I can advise you though. I like to study with friends (it's well-known that we learn best by teaching, and when you study with friends you'll be teaching each other a lot; it might be a good idea to set up study sessions with friends who aren't in your courses and play professor for one another). Also have fun! If you're learning Spanish vocabulary, for instance, play with it. Crack jokes with your friends using the class material. Weave it into conversations, make it a little game.
You can do all this before the test comes up, too.

Studying seems to work best when I am forced to piece it back together and use it myself. Otherwise it just seems like a torrent of not-particularly-useful information.
What do you study? About how long do you study for a particular exam (not counting recesses or time spent in classes)? Do you think your grades reflect the effort you've put?
Biology.
"About how long do you study for a particular exam (not counting recesses or time spent in classes)?"
For subjects that I have a lot of background knowledge in already, or grasp intuitively (biology and most humanities/languages), about 3 hours. For things I have to beat into my head (math and chemistry) ... as much time as it takes to understand the material, which is usually at least 6 hours. Finals require several days to comb over everything. Quizzes are two hours tops.
"Do you think your grades reflect the effort you've put?"
Not always, but enough to matter.
My grades tend to be OK, I think. I don't really know how much effort I should be putting in in order to achieve what results.
