I do this too, sometimes. Not due to a sense of conformity, but rather because, in my experience, it's pointless to argue alone against a large group of people who all share the same opinion, regardless of the validity of their arguments.

This effect applies to me mostly when people are gushing, since unless I feel particularly strongly to the contrary I would come off as a killjoy. However, in "Two Minutes Hate" threads, I feel obligated to say something to the contrary, even more so knowing that it encourages others to voice their own contrary opinions.

Asch found something even better. If one person disagrees with the group, even if they're wrong it frees the test subject to make the right answer. It's not about following that dissenter, it's about being given the okay to disagree.

Also, to funnyguts, the Wikipedia article says that a majority of three was what you needed. After that, the size of the majority stopped mattering as much.
