Websites and web services that e-mail me my account's password in plaintext

Because that causes my password to be demoted.  And if I'm using that password for secure purposes, I now have to change the password for said secure purposes.

  • Yeah, I don't like when websites do this either.  And in general, I'm pretty sure they shouldn't even be able to do this at all, since that means the passwords are stored in some way that it's even possible to convert them back to plaintext.  I'm pretty sure the usual method for storing passwords on a server is to only store the MD5 hash of the password (or some other cryptographic hash, I guess).  That way, even if someone was able to access the table of passwords on the server, they wouldn't actually be able to figure out anyone's password (though, then they'd be able to brute-force it more easily, but that's still better than nothing).
  • ....do you use any letter beyond what you can see on your keyboard? That's usually bound to run into problems.

    ^ I don't get it.

Though I rarely if ever use passwords that involve real words.
  • I think she misinterpreted "plaintext" to mean "ASCII" and is asking if you use any characters in your password that you can't type with a regular keyboard.

Yup. If you can't see the letter on your keyboard, most of the time the software doesn't support or process the passwords correctly. Using an & symbol on gaia translates to %7&s% or whatever, and something else on other forums.
