    Come to think of it the two prime examples I'm thinking of -Mai and Yuki- come from comedy shows so that might have something to do with it.

    Actually... not really.  Asuka is way more moe than Rei, I think.  Rei's still kinda cute though, at least in the earlier parts of the series.
