Follow The Leader

What fuels this mindset? It doesn't seem to make much sense to me.

Comments

  • "Hey, they made lots of money with X! If we make our own X, maybe we can make lots of money, too!"
  • Yeah, that, but from a consumer's standpoint it makes less sense...
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Which is why Follow The Leader things don't (usually) do as well as The Leader.
  • The other motivation is "Hey, that's a pretty good idea. What if I tried writing something like that myself?"

Lesser seen: "That sucked. I could do a better job using its ideas."

As much heck as Follow The Leader gets, it's a logical step of evolution from a revolution.

  • Those are actually solid motivations.

This comes to a head for me seeing all the crappy Home Alone ripoffs the Nostalgia Critic reviews. I try to get into the heads of the theoretical audience - "I like (or my kids like) Home Alone, so I'll take them to see more of the same?". I don't get it either.
  • It's the same thing that happens with MP3 players, Cellphones, Games, etc. It can be explained by Economics, but it involves terms that I'm not entirely sure how to translate to English.
