They're such a pain to read as text on a white background. Other primary colours don't have this problem, so why yellow?

Perhaps because of its strong brightness clashing so hard with white. Yellow/white has always been my least favorite color combination and I want to smack anyone who uses it seriously.

This has been bugging me for the longest time. Is there a such thing as "dark yellow"? Wouldn't dark yellow just be some sort of brown, or something similar?

However, it's terribly ugly.  So... yeah.

I think if you're looking for a dark yellow, it's probably best to just use orange or green or something instead.

Persona 4 uses yellow as the main color for its interface, and it usually uses a shade of orange when it needs a slightly darker color, which looks alright.

Yeah, but it's the color (128,128,0), so it's indeed a shade of yellow. Since it has an equal amount of red and green.  A very ugly shade of yellow, but a shade of yellow nonetheless.
