I applied for a Moderation Position at Minecraft Forums

edited 2011-03-02 16:47:31 in General
Seeing how I feel the need to actually do something on the internet and gain EXP in the world of Moderating, in a area that is easy to fixate on for me, I think this will work out. I turned in my application (so far the forum only has...errr...6 mods I believe, in a forum where 700+ people is regular) so I doubt I will be turned down. I was all civil, answered all the questions and showed my best colors.

I know I could end up in the Suggestions part of the subforum, the place that made me go berserk last time, but they understood that it was an infuriating time when Beta first came out and there were hundreds of threads about dragons and lag. They really need help, and when it comes to minecraft, I am not an idiot, so...

got any input?

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
That sounds like it would involve more actual work than being a mod here. Good luck.
  • Damn straight Don Zabu.
  • It's better to be a mod on a forum where there are few regular posters and everybody is friends with each other.

The minecraft forum is not very good.
  • It's gotten better since all of the bans.
  • They've banned everyone? Maybe it'll be worth going to now.

    So, what'd they actually do?
  • Reduced the warning system to 1 warning, then to a 3 day ban, then to a 7 day ban, then to a permanent ban.
  • In 2005/6 I was a sysop at SmashWiki and it was great; we had a small and friendly team and I felt I could chat with people on equal terms no matter my sysop title. In 2008 I returned briefly when SmashWiki had gotten a flood of new members because of Brawl's release. And it sucked. I suddenly had to deal with shitty users who constantly drummed up drama on their talk pages and never contributed anything good. And they all sucked up to me. There were good users, mostly the other sysops, but I couldn't stand the work. I suppose now it's cooled down and I can some back again (and in the past years I've lost my sysophood, so I wouldn't need to deal with that shit anyways), but I don't have anything to contribute anymore except to drop by and congratulate them on a good job.

Moderation is similar, so good luck if you get the position at the Minecraft forums. My advice: the job itself is easy. Find bad post, delete/edit it, warn user. But the social situation is trickier. Users will read what you say more carefully, so even when you post just for fun, establish a good tone and make the kinds of posts you wish your regular users would make. This goes a long way in keeping the forums happy and it's what distinguishes the good mods from the shitty ones.
  • I am now beginning to get sick of the suggestions forums now.

Have you ever had a song play in the background while you were working, and it was annoying, and then the longer you went on, the more covers people made of the song, and they never changed the part that annoyed you the most, and eventually you start getting sick of it?

Yeah, my passion for the Suggestions forum in MCF is degenerating quickly. I guess I could fix it, but right now, it's just a giant wave of already suggested ideas that will never be implemented, or a wave of 12 year olds  suggesting hummers, nukes, machine guns, blood and guts, sex, dragon mounts, and other idiotic shit that would "BESOAWEOSME!!!".

I guess I can't be too cynical, because a lot of the regulars there like my input, for it's neutral, not flamey, and generally intelligent and balanced.
  • Oh god, the suggestions forum? Why did you ever like it?

Well, you must have more patience than me.
  • It's because I first loved it for flaming the shit out of morons that spammed their bad ideas on the first page. then, I grew a heart and soft side for some of the more awesome suggestions (such as the 2x2 crafting grid, rangecraft and most of Fire Hazurd's mob ideas) and then I wanted to help out the people who did have good ideas but got their ideas flooded with idiots who could never be satisfied or knocked off the first page because of vine ideas or whining threads about skeletons or creepers. Eventually I realized I was the only one trying to help Suggestions.
  • Further proof that my psyche and Tnophelia's are merging.
  • I have a psyche? What's that?
  • I wish I knew how to mod Minecraft. Then I could make my idea (cloth armor that corresponds to the color of the wool used to make it) a reality.
  • Ah. I am trying to mod as well. the Minecraft Coder Pack is fucking junky and hard to work with.
