Somebody needs to stop Orson Scott Card. I get that 'the video games are actually real' twist was really appealing to game-obsessed twelve-year-olds, but Jesus Christ he writes with all the subtlety of an orbital nuke strike.
  • There's so much wrong with that, I have to focus on this.

There is a myth that homosexuals are "born that way," and we are pounded with this idea so thoroughly that many people think that somebody, somewhere, must have proved it.

What an incredibly subtle insinuation you've made with your choice of words there, Mr. Card. (I'm not sure if that was intentional, but it's certainly revealing.)

  • Writing in a style that is more interested in telling a story than being an obtuste "deep" dickwad is bad now?

You didn't read the link, did you

    AHAHAHAHAHAHA OH WOW, CHAGEN, U R HILARIOUSSSS~
  • You can change. You can.
    He's prabably refering to this:

Note that he considers it a virtue for a text to be "instantly comprehensible," as though it were a very bad thing to confront an audience with something they don't already know, understand, and believe. Also note the troubling idea that The Taming of the Shrew carries a "legitimate moral lesson" about gender roles.

  • "but Jesus Christ he writes with all the subtlety of an orbital nuke strike."

^ I was replying to this.
  • Man, I used to like his stuff.

    Oh well.
  • You can change. You can.
What has subtlety ever done to you, Chagen? Also, extremes fallacy, mah boi.
  • When the story is cluttered due to subtlety, things go sour.

On the other hand Card is a homophobic asshole so I don't read his works anyway
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Chagen, have you ever played the MGS games? In the first one, there are several scenes where Kojima basically pulls the player away from the game to mention that, by the way, nukes aren't good, in case you were wondering.

Lack of subtlety can clutter a story too.
  • Yeah, but it's to be expected in a MGS game.

Same with Narnia. It just can't let go of reminding you it's a Christian metaphor, so it destroys the story.

By all means I don't mean to obfuscate your points, but you have to give your audience credit.

    ^Being expected=/=good.
  • You can change. You can.
but the first one is awesome and stuff :<

    But yeah, fucking CODEC. >.>

^^^Yeah. It's one of the flaws you live with because the series is that good. But that doesn't make it something you look forward to.
  • Actually, I meant "subtlety is to be expected inan MGS game". Since I thougt they were known for their Mind Fuck plotline.
  • Subtlety is pretty much the opposite of cluttering. Almost by definition, even.

Aside from that, I don't think being interested in telling a story and in being "deep" are opposite goals in general. The article demonstrates that pretty well--all the thematic changes also serve to make the story less interesting.

^^Subtlety is present in the games, certainly. But when it comes to the subject of nukes, Kojima is very willing to stop gameplay for twenty minutes to lecture you about how awful they are.
  • You can change. You can.
And this is a man who normally stops gameplay. It's just that in these sections, he does it awfully and it's all so...ugh.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I will say it's nice to know that one developer in this saturated world of pro-military gung ho macho dickwad games doesn't think murdering people is the most awesome thing ever.
  • Okay, now that I know your point....

.....It's Kojima. I'd almost expect that out of a man as crazy as he is.

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
^^Oh, yeah. I definitely agree with his opinions on nukes, but really, he could be a little less loud about it.

^Doesn't mean it's one of his good points.
  • You can change. You can.
Again, expectedness doesn't make it tolerable.
  • Don't forget the sudden live action footage. That makes those more jarring than necessary as well.
  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
You know, I never got around to finishing MGS3. I suppose I could just preorder the 3DS version and play that...
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
I still need to finish MGS2...

    but goddamn Raiden...
