What era is your average jRPG, at least in the '90s, based on?

They call me Rate Miser, whatever I see... turns overrated in my eyes...
After playing Threads of Fate, Final Fantasy, Vagrant Story, and Breath of Fire, I wonder if these fantasy settings are based on a certain era of time (1400s, 900s, whatever), barring certain technological elements or celestial elements, or are they a hodge podge of what they consider to be medieval. Is there something I'm missing history-wise?

    OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
Most really aren't based on any era in particular.

Or if they are, they're done poorly enough that you can't tell.
  • Give us fire! Give us ruin! Give us our glory!
JRPGs of those days stuck more to its roots (D&D) than now. By that I mean, stock high medieval ages Europe with magic.
  • MORONS! I'VE GOT MORONS ON MY PAYROLL!
Medieval Europe, or at least the Japanese theme park version.
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
Japanese theme park Medieval Europe is best Medieval Europe.

Honestly, start with the 14th century. That's your High Middle Ages, and essentially most of the tropes and visual stimuli we associate with medieval stuff comes from then. Japanese theme park Medieval Europe included.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Generic Medieval European High Fantasy, not Tolkienesque but with some Tolkien/D&D influences, plus some steampunk and a few other random anachronistic things such as impossibly cool and/or functional architecture and villain weapons.
