"Peanuts"

The name came from Howdy Doody's "peanut gallery", but out of context it doesn't make any sense.

  • OOOooooOoOoOOoo, I'm a ghoOooOooOOOost!
It was originally going to be called "Good Old Charlie Brown" or something, IIRC.
  • Wikipedia says the name "L'il Folks" would be carried over from a feature Charles Schulz used to write.

Ah, that's what it was. It's been ages since I read about the early history of the comic.
  • I believe the syndicate chose the title for Schulz, even though he disliked it. He was afraid people would mistakenly assume "Peanuts" was the main character's name, which they often did.

Which, in turn, is probably why, for a long time, the title panel in the Sunday strips said something like "PEANUTS featuring Good Ol' Charlie Brown".
