I feel like an idiot for not going university this year.

Pretty much everyone I know is starting university. One of my closest friends, who is the same age as me, is going into his second year. Meanwhile I'm doing a fifth year of high school...

  • You can change. You can.
Why is this? Did you fail a year or something?
  • One foot in front of the other, every day.
I know that feel, although a little differently.

@Juan_Carlos: No, there are just some courses I want to take. Doing a fifth year isn't all that uncommon around here, but nobody else I know seems to be doing one.

I'm actually taking one course at university through a program at my school, too, but the more I think about it the more I wish I'd just rearranged my timetable a bit last year to fit in most of what I wanted to take and just gone to uni this year like a normal person...
  • If that's what interests you, then you've made the right decision.
  • You can never extend your stay in academia for too long(provided you don't extend it by slacking off). University is an awesome time, use the extra year to incorporate more side-activities into your life.

  • Can't be all bad if your high school is decent enough to offer courses you consider that worthwhile. University is also a good deal more expensive than high school, so if the courses are ones that can get you out of some requirements later, that could be nice.

It's probably not something that would have worked out well for me considering my high school is pretty small and the courses I wasn't able to take yet at the highest level weren't courses I was all that interested in. Also, the university I'm at got a lot harder to get into recently.

In any case it looks like you've already made your decision and what you're mainly concerned about now are appearances and social interactions. I suggest just calming down about it. There's plenty of new people to meet when you get there, and some people don't get around to university until a lot later in life, so you probably wouldn't be out of place even if it took another two years.

@Nyktos: You live in Canada, right?

That would explain the "extra year of high school" thing.

For everyone else's information: Canada is currently transitioning from a K-to-13 school system to a K-to-12 school system.
  • Yeah, he does live there. Didn't know that about Canada.
  • This will undoubtedly be more productive than the year I took off between school and university, which involved doing crappy jobs and singing in my church choir, and ultimately even that waste of time didn't matter too much. In the long run, most of these things work out.

"Canada is currently transitioning from a K-to-13 school system to a K-to-12 school system."

Wait, what? No, B.C. and Alberta at least have been using K-12 since I was 6. It varies by province, but I think you're referring to Ontario.

Well, that's why I was initially confused by the notion of taking a fifth year.

Well, I live in Ontario, so.
  • If Wikipedia isn't misleading me, there are 11 places in the U.S. called Ontario.

    I know that feel bro.

I'm taking a year off before I go to college, so all my friends are going off to college and leaving me behind. :<
  • You can change. You can.
Meh, I did that and I honestly don't regret it one bit.
  • $80+ per session
What did you guys do in the year off?
  • You can change. You can.
    Me? Nothing but personal growth.
  • You got a lot of boners?
  • You can change. You can.
No, I just made my current one bigger.

    On the inside.
