Fanart which makes you wonder who the hell it's supposed to be depicting.

I haven't seen this happen much, but seriously, how the hell can you tell this is the same person as this from the images alone?

    I predict it's Miyo Takano.

    I guessed Misa Amane. But then, my power level is rather low.

    The following are identifying characteristics of anime characters:
    * eye color
    * hair color
    * hairstyle, sometimes--depends on the situation.
    * color scheme in clothing choices, sometimes
    * gender(s)
    * sexual characteristics
    * other unique identifying features, usually.  However, these may be moved around or remixed.
    * skin color (in the rare cases someone isn't generically white-skinned)
  • That's the problem with anime characters and a lot of cartoon characters in general. They all look exactly the same with minor differences.

    Distinguishing characteristics of real people:
    * hair style, sometimes
    * hair color
    * height
    * style of clothing choices (negated at formalwear events, which annoys me greatly)
    * displayed gender, with variations
    * other unique identifying features, which are rarely moved around or remixed, but which may be covered.
    * skin color
    * facial features details
  • *displayed gender/sex

    ^^* weight (or perceived weight)
    ** body type
    * psychical anomalies / quirks / deformations / whatever
    * general body language / how one carries one's self
    * a lot more that I can't think of at the moment

    ^ I was talking about static and purely visual identification.

    But yes, I did miss weight/body type.  Though these are in broad categories, of "emaciated", "thin", "about right", "somewhat portly", "fat", and "way too fat".
  • As well as "lean", "athletic", "muscular" (which are apparently different somehow), "way too muscular / Ahnold".
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    I was talking about people in a normal casual setting, such as a city street, at around 65-75 degrees Fahrenheit.  So I wouldn't be seeing ripped abs, most likely.
  • I guess. Maybe it's just being from California. Fucking everyone's ripped here, unless they're anorexic.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    Well, I wouldn't expect to see bare skin on guys other than arms, neck/head, and maybe lower legs, hence my comment replying to yours about "muscular".

    On the other hand, tank tops and spaghetti straps seem to be common for girls.
  • Oh, forgot, there's also that one body type that's kind of skinny yet with a little pudge. Like, someone who normally would look anorexic, only with a slight gut that really isn't all that noticeable but is still there.

    ...Is there a word for that?

    "That's the problem with anime characters and a lot of cartoon characters in general. They all look exactly the same with minor differences."

    That's only been the case for me in shows where everyone essentially has the same face. And it doesn't apply here because it isn't official art anyway, the specific artist may use the same face over and over again, but that's because of what the artist intends to do, not because it is an anime/cartoon character. If someone made an anime version of a real person without the same eye color, hair color, hairstyle, gender, sexual characteristics, etc. I doubt it would be recognizable through images alone either. I also consider anyone who thinks this and this looks pretty much the same only with minor differences to be practically blind.
  • "If someone made an anime version of a real person without the same eye color, hair color, hairstyle, gender, sexual characteristics, etc."

    ...Then it's really not an anime version of that person at all, now is it?

    And of course that doesn't apply to different styles. Admit it, does the first pic you linked to even look like most anime art? No, so of course those characters are going to look different.
  • I don't really have an image of "most anime-like art." There are certain things that make me think of anime, but there are too many differences for me to make a large generalization. It's easier for me to think of real humans in a stereotypical appearance.

    "...Then it's really not an anime version of that person at all, now is it?"

    Your statement was "That's the problem with anime characters and a lot of cartoon characters in general. They all look exactly the same with minor differences."

    which came right after:

    "* eye color
    * hair color
    * hairstyle, sometimes--depends on the situation.
    * color scheme in clothing choices, sometimes
    * gender(s)
    * sexual characteristics
    * other unique identifying features, usually.  However, these may be moved around or remixed.
    * skin color"
  • Most anime art = big head, huge eyes, small, barely visible nose.

    You're missing the point. If you're making art of anyone and change that much stuff, it's no longer art of that person, be it an anime character or someone IRL.

    What the hell is a minor difference in this case then? And your definition of most anime art, which covers a huge amount of variety, is in the first picture. Unless you're talking about my Akagi picture. I don't really know if that can cover most anime art either. It might cover most modern anime-style art, but there was anime in the 70s too.
  • Maybe minor wasn't the right word, but face it, when it comes to most anime, pretty much all of the characters are made from the exact same template. There's usually little variation in facial structure or body type. And yes, I'm talking about the Akagi picture.
  • If you mean anime in general, I consider you blind.

    If you mean in the shows they're from, that's certainly the case for a lot of anime, but i've also seen enough cases where it isn't to prevent me from making an "all anime looks like this" eye.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
    Where's that chart of nine different styles of animesque art, in increasing distance from verisimilitude?
  • Obviously I mean within individual shows. Sure, there are exceptions, but they're pretty few and far inbetween.

    "If someone made an anime version of a real person without the same eye color, hair color, hairstyle, gender, sexual characteristics, etc."

    ...Then it's really not an anime version of that person at all, now is it?
    Why not?
  • Well, how would that even work?
  • The same way the artist in the opening post that drew the first image is depicting the character in the second image.
  • ...So, you're defending the very thing that you're complaining about?
  • I never said i'm defending it.
  • Then my question stands. If someone decided to make an anime picture of an actual person but changed just about everything about them, or even just a few things, no one would know who it's supposed to be without the artist saying it. The same goes for the pictures in the OP. It might as well be someone else entirely

    It certainly should be someone else entirely if they intend on changing the (known) appearance that much. But that doesn't mean it is one. Unless by "work" you mean "recognizable alone" which...has sort of happening before, though not as an anime version. The common general depiction of Jesus is probably not what he really looked like.
