Militantly nostalgic fans

Chances are if you're a fan of a major long-running franchise, you've run into these people. These are the people that constantly complain about how their object of affection has jumped the shark, how current installments continue to poison the good name of the franchise forever, how the creators don't give a damn about they, they, that brought them to success in the first place, and how you're an intellectually stunted commoner for clinging to this franchise and allowing this debauchery to continue rather than be put out of its misery. I can understand trying to offer constructive criticism about what worked before and what doesn't work now, but this level of hate obsession? And their reaction to, say, Sonic 4 just goes to show how ridiculous the whole thing is. So SEGA tries to cater to older fans by giving them a classic-style game, and all they do is whine about how wrong everything is. Now I haven't played Sonic 4, but there comes a point where you wonder: if they're so smart, why not make the thing themselves?

  • You can change. You can.
if they're so smart, why not make the thing themselves?

And you were doing so well.
  • Wouldn't it be a more constructive use of energy than constantly nitpicking at something's flaws? And people have tried their hands at fan continuations.
  • You can change. You can.
The problem at hand is that creating a game that follows on the vision of many of these people takes resources they don't possess.

Also, by that logic, all critics suck.

    And I beg to differ.

    Thump.

Okay, let's try this, then: for all the weight you put on this issue, I doubt the folks at Sega actually care that much about those people or their comments.
  • ^^Okay, I guess that would be unreasonable to expect. Though in regards to critics, constructive criticism is always helpful, and I guess less than constructive criticism can indicate unrest. But when it becomes just as obsessive as fans of something, that seems rather excess.

    Silence is golden.
f they're so smart, why not make the thing themselves

In addition to what Juan_Carlos said, deal is that several disgrunted fans did/are making their own games  (see Sonic Fan Remix for ex. Or Sonic 2 HD which is a lot more involved than what its name would suggest).

    Dude, you're better than this : (.
