AU: I think part of the difference is that this forum is, y'know, independently hosted, so Unknown Entity & Co. can add features like that when they want to, whereas your forum is on Vanilla's site and the software changes whenever they change it.

You're probably right, because for a while there were one or two people who hadn't logged in since before the IP addresses showed up, and they didn't have IPs next to them in the user list.

That's what I figured.

On AU's forum it was just something that showed up one day. I assume it was the vanillaforums.com's people's doing.

^^^There are certain circumstances under which it doesn't work. I'm...not going to say what they are, on a public thread, naturally, but we've identified at least one. Someone who exclusively posts under those circumstances (which is more plausible than you'd think) would have no IP listed.
