"Strictly better/worse than X"

Morgan Freeman is God
What is it about the Magic fandom that makes people use this phrase when comparing cards?

Comments

  • Stupidity.

Really though, it does get overused, but it can be true for certain situations.
  • Creature - Florida Dragon Turtle Human
Is Hickory Woodlot strictly worse than a forest?

Because I know this is a point of contention I had with two MTG-playing friends a few years back.
  • Not really. I bet there are some decks that can make better use of it than a forest, but it would be difficult.

And proliferate makes it easier to abuse.
  • So, is Divinity of Pride > Loamhammer?
  • Not being familiar with the magic fandom, I'd assume it's used in a context in which a card fulfills the role of another card better in every way. For example, a 6/6 effect-less creature that costs 3 colorless and one blue mana would be strictly better than another one that has the same cost and (lack of) effects, but 5/5 stats.

I know, lol blue beatstick, but it was just a hypothetical example.
