My explanation: 1+1=3 for a normal heterosexual couple since they can have procreative sex. Since lesbians cannot get each other pregnant (except through highly unusual means), this prevents the fridge logic of pregnancy and childbirth from interfering with fanservice/pornographic displays of sexual activity.

The actual explanation: sexually depicted girl = appealing to men, so 2 x sexually depicted girl = 2 x appealing to men.

Well, see, if you ship a male character and a female character, they might end up having children and you have to rethink your whole story to accommodate that.

But if you just ship two female characters, they won't have children. Unless they encounter ragged orphans dragging boxes through sewers by chains.
