That the only two countries that seem to exist are the USA and Japan

Those are the only countries people ever talk about on TV Tropes Forum for the most part. Maybe the English Commonwealth countries (and Europe courtesy of Kinkajou) can be included, but to a much lesser extent. Why is mass media so powerful that interest in a nation is strongly correlated with the popularity of its media? Or is it just because TV Tropes is a media-centric site?

I'd say it's the media-centric thing. And people talk about other countries lots. Those two are just in the lead by far.

Among creative media, yeah, these are the two big countries. Occasionally the UK or Canada gets a mention.

For other topics, you get different sets of countries.

I recently watched the Millenium Trilogy movies. They're from Sweden. Very good series.

Naturally, they're getting an Americanized version...not looking forward to seeing how that turns out.
