My Pet fish are DEAD

:(

They all died from ich last night. I don't know how this happened. I keep my pH levels balanced, the water temperature right, the filters clean and keep the fish well fed.

When I was reading up on ich, a fish can naturally develop the parasite on their own just from being stressed out, without exposure to any previous infected fish.

This means if my fish get too uncomfortable, they becomes pox blankets that will systematically annihilate every fish in my tank....is this what caused it?

Well, either way, my favorite 4 year old Swordtail is dead, and so are all of the baby guppies I had in there.

My boss said I could take the day off to mourn and bury my fish, so I am probably going to get started on my NGE LB when I get done cleaning out my tank.

  • I am Dr. Ned who is totally not Dr. Zed in disguise.
Any idea what might have been causing them stress?

    Has friends besides tanks now
That sucks. I'm sorry that happened. /doesn't know what he's supposed to say

It's nice that your boss is letting you have the day off for it, though.
  • Glaives are better.
I feel your pain, Vorpy. I once had a fish named Scarlette O'Hara who similarly died. :(
  • My condolences, Vorpy. While I've never owned fish, I have lost pets before.
  • condolences I know how it is I had a fish once.
  • My deepest condolances.

My family's fish died of a similar illness.  There was not a single survivor in the tank.  :(  The sad thing was the female swordtail had recently given birth.  We later found that she was too young to give birth safely.  We never kept fish again.

But good news everyone, there are but two left. Two little babies I have found in my....filter.

When I was getting ready to clean out my tank I found two little black fry swimming around underneath the filter pocket. I have no idea how they managed to survive and avoid being shredded into pieces by the suction. Apparently though, this little plastic pocket inside of there collects food and fish poop, and evades the suction entirely, and that's what the little fry have been surviving in.

I have put them into the 10 gallon breeding tank and they are doing fine now.

I had some tiny goldfish when I was younger. When they died, I buried them in the garden rather than flush them down the toilet. Thought it was more dignified that way.

Wait, how can a fish develop a parasite through stress?

And glad to hear that there are survivors
  • They're somethin' else.
    ^^^^ HAHAHAHAHA!!

    @ Vorpy: -huggles-
  • ^x3 stress weakens the immune system.  We are often unaware how many parasites we encounter because the immune system defeats them.

^ I realize that. Vorpy made it sound like the parasite was born via stress though and it confused me for a few hours D:

  • Why did I read the thread title that way.

Well I wrote it like this with that in mind.

I would probably go SNAAAAAAAAAAAKE > FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIISH but I don't think people would get the joke
  • Ahh I see. I was worried for a moment that I was being terribly insensitive. XD

*thinks* I remember having a fish named Shark a long time ago now actually.

I am probably going to take a 377 mile drive down to ND, in one of the Hot Springs by Bismarck. Over there they have some springs that Guppies naturally live in, and I am going to catch some of the larger ones and restart my breeding aquarium. The ones caught wild, tend to die off a lot less quickly and grow huge and have around 40+ fry in one birthing.
  • Awww good luck~! I'm sure you'll have a veritable pantheon of Vorpy Jr.'s soon enough~. 8D
