How bad is New York really?

I was thinking of visiting New York University some time this summer, but mom's scared at the prospect of driving in New York instead of having my stepdad, who lived in Boston for a while, do it. And I also think she's kinda scared of New York City as a whole.

Where's that thread on TVTropes about New York? I forgot a lot of what I read there.

I bet mostly the latter, but I don't think she likes the state as a whole either.

As long as you're not friendly to anyone, you'll be fine. Also, do not put ketchup on your hotdog, jaywalk always and often, and don't constantly look upwards at all the buildings.

Wait, isn't Manhattan one of the worst places in the country to be driving in? Couldn't you just take the train?

Yeah, we figured we'll use a train after flying to Rhode Island or summat.

Keep in mind that the only way to get to New York from Rhode Island is using Amtrack, which is usually expensive. And if you get out at Penn Station, for the love of Christ don't use any of the food vendors nearby.

We were thinking Penn Station, but ironically enough, my stepbrother said the food vendors there were actually good. :?

But they're stupidly expensive. Five dollars for a fucking pretzel. Go somewhere less crowded and you'll easily get it for two dollars.

Well, we're actually going to see about scheduling a visit if I get accepted there instead, to save the trouble of going to New York for nothing, I guess.
