OK, I can see why folks might dislike having someone else's religion shoved into the most inappropriate places, but that does not change the fact that the calendar most of the world uses is dated from the (very) approximate year of Jesus's birth, and that does not change the fact that claiming a 'common era' began with the birth of one religion's Messiah is an utterly ridiculous and condescending way to paper over the whole mess.
And that is why, as an atheist, I am going to stick with Anno Domini until another, completely different calendar entirely devoid of religious connotations becomes sufficiently widespread.

And my gripe with CE is that it somehow manages to be even more offensive to non-Christians, for the reasons mentioned in the OP. If you're going to sugarcoat, at least try to do it right.
