My mother started smoking AGAIN!

Mr. The Edge goes to Washington
My nearly 50 year old mother has started smoking again... after the recent birth of her grand-son. She doesn't smoke around him of course, but seriously? WTF MOM?! She hasn't smoked since her 30s and apparently only started back because they were there (my sister's baby daddy smokes) and stress. Now, I know stress but is starting a harmful habit the best way of dealing with stress? Honestly, this is why I don't call or visit my family much anymore.

She's fifty! I think she's old enough to make her own decisions.

And she's also old enough to where she should know that her selfish decisions effect more than just her. My nephew can still suffer from second-hand smoke just from being around her after she smokes. That stuff sticks to you. The same goes for my nephew's father.

    ^Btw, welcome!

Secondhand smoke, especially when it's not even... smoke, is severely overestimated. Call me when your nephew gets cancer. Then I'll be sympathetic.

Cancer isn't the only disease that could happen, but I don't need to go onto list everything.

All I'm saying is, I'm not too worried about it, dude.
  • No rainbow star
I'd be more worried about how the smoke can enter the lungs of others even in a well venitilated area

^^Of course, you're not worried about it. It's not your problem.

Your nephew's more likely to choke on a lego than develop anything from your mom's smoking when she's not even smoking around him.

^You must think I don't give a fuck about children who aren't mine.

I agree with you there and sure, my mom tracking it the chemicals from smoking on her person is might not likely cause him noticable health issues. But there is a chance.

There's a chance he'll fall down the stairs and break his neck, too. Which is actually more likely. It's all about perspective, bro.

^^^I was under that impression at first, but your wording of your third comment really just made me think that. "All I'm saying is, you shouldn't worry too much." sounds better. But I get that you are not trying to be a jerk about it and that you just think that I am worried too much. Which I probably am, but he is my nephew and all, just barely a week old.

Bah! It'll build his immune system. So will eating dirt.

I hope so. But another part if this is that I just think my mom is too old to start smoking again. She's not as young as she used to be and she has her blood pressure to think about as well. I worry a lot as you can tell. I'm not always like this.
  • Electric Boogaloo
Actually, smoking's better the older you get.

Sometimes, I believe that. My great-grandmother smoked all of her life and died at age 87. She worked until her retirement as well and had no major health problems. It's different for different people though.

But the Truth commercials told me everybody fucking dies!
