Title was done on purpose because Character Map was open. -disables the do the research feature-Neon Genesis Evangelion was an anime that I have heard many good and bad things about, one of the most popular, and from what I've read, controversial animes there are out there as of far. I have had the benefit of being able to obtain this series without having it completely spoiled for me. It was the series I strived as hard as I could to avoid spoilers for, since due to the introduction of the anime fandom and TV Tropes itself, I found out a lot of things on other animes that pretty much erased all of the possible mystery and suspense behind them, and I knew who would die, who would win and what would happen before I got the opportunity to find it out myself, some of them being Death Note and Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann.Spoilers thus far:There are hundreds of clones of Rei
Congratulations appears at the end, not sure why yet though, could be because everyone wins.
Asuka dies horribly somehow?
That's about it so far. Let it be known that I am watching the dubbed version (cue groans) because from what I know, there is going to be a lot of things to watch and I don't want to be distracted reading everything and instead listen to it.
Now lets get to the interesting part, shall we?
I shall explain what happens in the episode I am watching, and what I think about it. That's how liveblogs work, right? Just be warned though, that reading this while also not having watched NGE might spoil the experience for you. And this Liveblog is known to the state of California to cause cancer.
QUICK LINKSEpisode One - Angel Attack
Comments
The opening is amazingly catchy and very heartwarming to listen to. The rapid flashing of different scenes and characters was a very nice panorama to watch, making the different beats in the singing make a stronger impact. Although it could just be my headphones. Either way after I listened to it I was humming along to it at work, even though I only listened to it once.
At the beginning of the episode, it brings everyone to the view of a decimated city, abandoned with various weaponized vehicles scattered about, being armed. In the darkness of a flooded sea, a lumbering being is gliding through the water ominously. It pans down to the main character, Shinji Ikari, who is awaiting his ride from a very attractive purple haired woman.
Then, after a shockwave rattles everything around him, out from the mountains a retreating fleet of ships appear, and behind it is the echoing lumbering mass of what appears to be a fleshy black giant with a red core and a face that resembles a demented shyguy. Within the first couple minutes my interests are already piqued and locked on what is currently happening. Waves of missiles are launched at it, and it completely ignores all of the pretty silver explosions that they release, and it simply blasts a plane out of the sky, watching as it crashes below and begins to rain hell on Shinji setting him into a panic. Luckily for him, his pretty purple-haired protector arrives just in time to save him.
The miltary taskmasters are continuing giving out orders and having them launch even larger missiles than the lumbering giant itself, but frankly my dear, it doesn't give a damn. It simply catches it mid-air and splits it right down the middle.
They realize not even this can stop it, so they resort to something even stronger and more devastating, something they refer to as an N2 Mine.
Boom. Big boom.
And while the shockwave of the bomb begins to push apart everything next to it, our unlucky main characters Shinji and Misato are blown off of the road by the shockwave as well. They survive through it, peeking out of the shattered windows and gazing at the super-massive implosion of force still settling.
As everyone recovers from the shockwave, Misato and Shinji flipping the car back over and getting to know each other better, and the military get ready to evaluate the situation to see if the target is destroyed, they make a very disheartening and frightening discovery.
Standing above the horizon, amongst the brilliant ruddish debris still emanating in the sky, the thing still stands there, staring straight ahead. As the camera pans closer, you begin to look at it and see that it isn't a machine or a massive robot, but a living creature. From the sides there are lung-like apparatus that inhale air, making an unsettling bellowing noise, as another face is seen emerging from the wounds of the being again, blood dripping down it's darkened epidermis.
Misato and Shinji begin to drive down to their objective area in their newly duct-tape repaired car, happily going back and forth at each other, while they reach an area under the control of an organzation called NERV, the group that Shinji's father works for. Shinji's father is currently attempting to launch something dubbed "Unit 01" to stop the creatures named "angels", the massive giants that are wreaking havoc in the story right now. Mr. Ikari declares that Unit 01 can now be launched thanks to the discovery of a new potential pilot for it.
As Misato and Shinji talk about meeting Shinji's father, and possibly working for NERV, I can't help but notice that....there is a very awesome car elevator bringing them down to their area. Not only that, soon after a glorious golden city is revealed right next to them, a fortress to protect everyone.
After they get lost in the corridors and tracks a bit, they come across another scientist by the name Ritsuko, who was just busy diving in a pool of purple water, and is wearing a one-piece swimsuit and a labcoat, and they talk about Shinji and him being "the third child". They get Shinji ready to meet his father and discussing Unit 01. As they pass by a giant glass wall with the purple liquid Ritsuko was swimming in...
....I noticed something very uncanny inside of it....a giant hand.
Then we get the first look at Unit 01, a synthetic lifeform named "The Evangelion". Only it's head is currently visible at the moment, and it's deactivated at the moment. Shinji finds out that it was his father, Gendo Ikari, who was responsible for creating it, and for the first time in years, Shinji finally meets his dad again, face to face.
And as they begin to discuss who will pilot it, and who can't at the moment, they declare that Shinji Ikari is now going to be the new pilotic of this synthetic Evangelion unit, to fight the angel that is terrorizing the city above. As Shinji begins to question his father and the other's motive, he figures out that he was only brought here to pilot the Evangelion by his father's orders.
He doesn't take it very well, at all. He begins to rant at his father for only bringing him here for a task he wanted to have accomplished, and letting his lack of self-esteem take over him as he cries out to the others that he can't pilot it and he won't. Even as the Angel begins to raise hell above. Once they realize that Shinji is refusing to pilot it, they decide to call for Rei to pilot it instead, Gendo proclaiming "She's not dead yet."
Shinji watches as a couple of nurses roll a stretcher out in front of Evangelion, bearing a very badly beaten girl seething in pain as she struggles to get up off of the stretcher. This is Rei Ayanami, and she will be piloting the Evangelion in place of Shinji, to fight the angel that's attacking. Quickly soon after, the angel attacks the city, and an eruption begins to shake the facility they are in, and as a giant amount of loosened debris falls from the roof and almost kills Shinji and possibly others, the Evangelion activates itself mysteriously and shields him from the debris.
While the scientists and engineers are completely bewildered and confused on why the Evangelion activates without any interface at all, Shinji quickly rushes over to tend to Rei, who is collapsed on the ground writhing in pain. Eventually, after holding the bloodied undone girl in his arms and taking a few seconds to re-evaluate himself, he does the right thing and volunteers to pilot the Evangelion. Good job Shinji.
Soon enough, Shinji is then inserted into the Evangelion, and much technological porn occurs, many elaborate machinery and well-drawn plates and gears are shown as the Evangelion is being readied to be launched and Shinji gets comfortable and familiar with his new Synthetic lifeform battle unit. I mean, seriously, look at this. Look at all of the sheening purple metal. It's almost like I could TOUCH IT oooooooooo.
The Evangelion is soon launched afterwards, very rapidly
through a series of elaborate chutes, and finally arrives at the top,
where the looming angel is, standing in the middle fo the city with an
ominous eyeless glare being sent ahead.
The Evangelion is then launched above ground, unlocked
from it's railings as it stares face to face with the gigantic being
that has caused so much destruction and has been nigh unkillable since
the time it has first appeared.
Shinji faces his enemy, directly in front of him, and gets ready for his first fight.
To Be Continued
I am enjoying it already.
Fridge Logic: Why would someone supposedly that attractive need to make such a big point of it? Either Misato has a bit too much about sex appeal on her mind, or she is specifically trying to lure what she expects (somewhat rightfully so) to be a very unwilling person to come pilot the darn thing.
It also turns out that we should not really try to make sense of why the circumstances have conspired to make such a perfect storm that this creature would appear now and Shinji would be forced in multiple ways by circumstance to be the main character and pilot of an evangelion.
(I hope that last bit doesn't count as a spoiler. It's pretty much You Should Know This Already by now, if that series poster picture of Shinji in a latex
spaceflight suit didn't give it away.)man, that show is weird.
1-I'm lazy as fuck
Deux-There are only like 5 subbed episodes on youtube
Unfortunately, I don't want this show spoilered for me any more than it already has been through other sources... :c
SOOOOOOOOO I will not read any more of your liveblog until after I (start and) finish watching this show.
Welcome to the 2nd Episode of Neon Genesis Evangelion. As of far, we have encountered a few of the main characters in the story. Shinji Ikari is the main character of the story, a boy who was imported from his original home by his father in order to pilot the Synthetic battle unit Evangelion. Gendo Ikari is in charge of the organization called NERV, which is dedicated to fighting off colossal beings known as angels who cause rampant destruction everywhere they go. Rei is the current out-of-comission ex-pilot of the Evangelion. Ritsuko is a scientist who works with Misato, and they manage the actions and systems of the Evangelion unit. Misato also has purple hair, that should be noted, because it is very important.
edit: damn it
